Post subject:  Dogs Poisoned
Was at the Vet's this morning , he told me to be very careful walking the dog as he had so many cases of poisoning over the weekend that he has now run out of antidote. He had never known it so bad.

The problem , the vet said , was widespread , Mesogi , Tala & Tremithousa plus some others .

Thanks for that, at least our other members will be able to take note & watch where they take their dogs now, :( it'll be even worse if there's poison down when it starts to rain, as this will just spread it even more :shock: :shock:

Yes Pete, unfortunately it doesn't wash away quite so easily so watch out peeps as even slightly diluted it is still lethal. I know someone who took their dog out after it had been raining and when the dog got home licked his paws and then it hit. Luckily enough the dog was saved.

After seeing two dogs die through poisioning, I know how horrid it is.

Did the vet say anywhere in particular in Emba(apart from the other villages) Stormy? Coco's too little for walks just now but it'd be nice to know where to avoid when I do take her out n about.

Funny, I was about to go to Yiannis to ask for an antidote as that was first on my list of "stuff I need"

Why do people do this, they are scum. I would love to give them a dose of there own medicine and watch them die a slow agonising death. It gets me so angry.

I really hope what goes around, comes around, but they just seem to get away with causing pain, suffering and death without even battering an eye.

This disgusts me too. We are careful where we walk Kofie. I have recently seen signs on the Universal area that someone put up to warn folk that some barsteward has put poision down.
I would love to get me hands on them.

I know this is a really touchy subject, but just one thing it is not always that it has been put down deliberately. The reason I say this is because Artemis who we rushed to the vet after being poisoned was not in fact deliberately poisoned but a neighbour had been spraying the plot behind his house (also his land) with a weed killer - don't know what one but it nearly killed her.

I hate to tell you guys but there is no such this as an antedote for poisoning. What the vet meant was that he had run out of ATROPINE SULPHATE. This is a drug which protects the heart and prolongs the timescale that you have to get your pet to a vet.
It is a drug which is given to your pet after anasthaesia has been administered. It is also given to humans for the same reason and also medics in the 3 services are given this to administer if a serviceman gets injured.

What you need to ask your vet is for the ATROPINE SULPHATE, but your dog must be weighed to get a rough idea of how much to give. As well as the fact that it differs from each animal on how much should be given. Some dogs, regardless of size and weight, need more or less. Also get a syringe.
If you think your pet has been poisoned, then give the ATROPINE SULPHATE immediately. This is done in a back leg or the scruff of the neck but must not be put into muscle, you've all seen your pets vaccinated so follow that example. Bunch up a fold of skin and inject it into that, your pet cant afford time for you to be queamish, just DO IT :!:
Its best to do what I do and take it with you when you take your pet for a walk, but dont forget to put it in the fridge ASAP when you get home. It should be stored at 25c, so by leaving it in your car you reduce the life of the drug.

Maggie thanks for the info a lot of people don't realise that this drug--like you say -- only gives you some time to get your pet to the vet--- its not a cure -- the bigger the dog the better chance of survival so get to the vet quickly. Marj

Having read the post on CL this is a deliberate act of poisoning as two dogs were poisoned in their own garden. For the first time (and the dogs were wondering what was happening) this morning I went out and checked my garden all round just in case, but thankfully nothing in it.

Posted on " the other " forum the following villages are also affected :

Tsada, Kallepia & Lytembou.

Also, it appears that dogs in gardens are being targeted , so it's as well to have a daily thorough check around .

I'm keeping my current house guest firmly attached to his lead on all our walks as apparently he's prone to picking up and eating pretty much anything left lying around, and I really don't want the grief that would be involved in breaking a friend's dog!

I was in the vets at Peyia this morning with my cat, and a dog was rushed in with Poisoning, so Peyia is affected as well.

For all you dog owners that live near Peyia, The vet there (Enna) is an expert on poisons and snake bites, (the work dog got bitten by a viper last Thursday, and was rushed to Peyia vets, 3 hours in the vets and he returned home as right as rain, well apart from the big lump on his face which went down the next day)

Glad to hear your dog is ok now.The only downside off cyprus i feel is when you hear and read about the aamount of poisoning of pets that go on.

One of Andy's customers yesterday told him
her Cat had been poisoned to which she had
the misfortune of finding her already dead on
thursday evening this was in Mesogi so thought
i would mention it as to be aware YET AGAIN.

I think we have to be aware of it all the time Carol. One of the first commands I teach my dogs is leave, unfortunately KooKoo and Keo are still stubborn little brats and have to be told more than once.

What I always look out for is fish heads - one of the things they love to put poisoning on, but also anything that looks suspicious. A lot of the time round our area the ferral cats have been in the bins and there is always bones around - now tell me what dog can't resist a bone even if they are not allowed them at home, but if you keep your eyes peeled at times the bait that has been put down is very obvious. A few months ago one was a whole pizza up the correct way, so we binned it although I imagine some unlucky puddy had a good lick of it first.

Where in Mesogi Carol :? :?

The reason I'm asking is, if a cat is poisoned & it's throwsup, will a dog who sniffs & licks the sick, as dogs do, get poisoned as well :? :?

Pete really don't know the correct answer but will try to find out for you, but to be on the safe side better training Noushie not to sniff anything. I know easier said than done.

Not sure of the road name but as you go up
the polis road and turn right into mesogi on
the Anavargos road its the second turning on
your left just before the kiosk, there is a cypriot
school at the end of this road if you turn left
there are new apartments their cat was found
there about 50 metres from their home. Such
a shame. :evil:
