Does anyone know the criteria for qualifying for a duty free car? PLEASE don't point me to a Government website, as I hate them with a pasion. Would just like to know if anyone knows/knows someone who does.

Tina, not sure about the criteria to have one but do know that there are severe restrictions if you do get one as to who can actually drive the car and when selling, the duty has to be paid by you the vendor or the purchaser.

Some friends I know qualified for one but felt the restrictions to great to make it worthwhile.

Thanks for that. I didn't know there would be restrictions, but then I don't know much about it either. Just someone suggested we may qualify for one so I thought I would find out before we make the final decision about bringing our car over, which so far seems worth it.

Dear Madam,

With reference to your e-mail dated 27 October 2005, I would like to inform you the following:

A. Persons who are coming to settle permanently in the Republic

According to subheading 17 of item P of Annex I of The Customs and Excise Duties (Relief From Import and Excise Duties) Regulation of 2004, (P.I. 380/04) persons who settle permanently in the Republic without practicing any profession, are allowed to import or acquire locally a brand new or used m/vehicle (as defined by Law) without payment of the excise duties provided that:

 they live on funds emanating from abroad
 neither the applicant nor any member of his family practices any kind of business or is engaged in any sort of employment or profession

Import duty must be paid if the m/vehicle is imported from a country outside the EU.

VAT is charged on:

 brand new m/vehicles
 used motor vehicles imported from a country outside the EU and
 used motor vehicles for which VAT has already been paid in a member state and refunded on exportation

The relief is limited to one vehicle for each person. The replacement of such a m/vehicle is permitted provided the person continues to reside in the Republic and has disposed of the previously cleared by him free of excise duties vehicle.

An application on the appropriate form is to be completed in person by the applicant in Nicosia Customs, Andrea Karyou 1, Industrial Area, Engomi.

General Information

A T2L document certified by the competent authorities of your country must be produced in order to prove the community status of your personal and household belongings.

For any further information you are advised to visit our website http://www.mof.gov.cy/ce where you will find all information you need on m/vehicles if you click on the picture of the m/vehicle.

Thanks Molly,

Yes this does help. Sop apparently we could qualify since we do not intend to work and we would be living off funds emanating from the UK That would mean we could import our car duty free, or buy a duty free car I presume. Does this mean a duty free car for each of us???

Hi Frank

If you see copy of email I received from Customs (above) you will see it states 'The relief is limited to one vehicle for each person. '

It could have changed, if it has maybe someone will let us know.
When I get time I will see if I can check it out.

Molly
