When watching cooking (and others) shows there is this overriding need of presenters to pronounce the word HERB as URB often using a Jamaican type tilt.

Just a small thing but it gets my goat.

Any other words have this effect on you.

I know it isn't a word but HAITCH drives me nuts! Especially when I hear it from television announcers who are paid a fortune to communicate in English and should know better! Not keen on Westminister (BBC Political Correspondent believe it or not!) either.

How about when waiters serve up your grub and they say "enjoy". Why can,t they simply say "enjoy you meal"..Oh dear I must be getting old

I am a stickler for correct grammar, spelling and syntax so I won't even start...!

When news presenters offer to "keep across" that story.... What's wrong with "keep you updated"?

Then there's use of the phrase "at all", esp by younger people.

In a shop: "Can I help you, at all". And so on. It seems to be meaninglessly tagged on to virtually every sentence by some people.

I'm a real pedant (read pain in the arm-pit) for grammar and spelling, especially the apostrophe. So many people see an S and put an apostrophe somewhere near it, anywhere will do.

Another pet hate is people saying 'could of' instead of 'could have' Grr.

Presenters on the Antiques Roadshow (and other such programmes) who keep referring to JEWLER..RY, when the correct pronunciation is JEWEL..RY. They at least should know better!

Countdown is not American but how many times, in the course of 30 minutes, do you hear the word ........

I prefer those who state, unequivocally, what they think .... without having to be 'prompted' .... no matter whether one agrees with them or not.

Agree with all of the above. One phrase I don't like is "back in the day". Another one is when some say "windowscreen" when they really mean "windscreen"!

As the owners who put the sign up were British, it says ( tempted to put say's ) a lot about the UK education system.

My inner pedanticism did indeed consider that the original owners could have the surnames of Riley, Fish and Chip, however, surely it should then be Riley's, Fish's & Chip's Restaurant ??

I saw that report on BBC, last night.
It reminded me of my 'other half', who used to leave my side whilst walking in town .... to nip into shops ( especially greengrocers) to remind the shop's staff of their abysmal spelling capabilities ... e.g. 'potatos', 'tomatos' etc. painted wording on their windows.
I used to feel proud, although a little embarrassed by his actions.
Now, I have no fear of copying his actions .... It's a case of redressing someone's poor standard of education.
No-one is perfect ... but we can, politely, help to correct such errors.

I go into hotels and other establishments when I'm in Pafos to tell them when they are flying the Union Flag upside down.

Usually met with a shrug. I then say would you fly the Cypriot Flag upside down?.....

I agree that standards have slipped but language is a means of communication and if you can understand it then there is no great problem. I still cringe at some of the grammar and punctuation.

'Whatever'.

'As you do'.

'It goes to show'.

'To die for'.

At one time TV announcer/commentators spoke the Queens English now mispronunciation is acceptable it seems.

I understand that there once was a pronunciation unit in the BBC but it was made redundant.

And it sure shows.

'Literally' is another one, as in 'It literally made my eyes bleed' Well, no, your eyes didn't really bleed, did they?

'Actually' every other word.

Putting the word 'so' in front of a sentence.

Oh yes, that is probably the worst! So my name is Bill, so I'm a dustman etc....

SINBIN. Bin there, Sin that .....

.... and the well used union term ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

From the get go - what does that even mean, why not just use start or beginning?

Init - particularly when even isn't it doesn't fit - I'm going to the shops, init.

Less when it should be fewer.

Bae - seems to be the new word for babe/baby. Also, it's the Danish word for poo.

As mentioned above, the extra apostrophe - living in Ayrshire, Robert Burns makes a frequent appearance in various business names etc. My local fish and chip shop has named itself the Burn's Supper - maybe the apostrophiser could make a wee overnight visit.

How about the well used phrase at the moment of "it sucks"?

I think the apostrophiser has got his work cut out and it seem's ( LOL ) to be an international problem now Scotland is suffering from the same said blight

On the point about apostrophes, the most bizarre example I ever saw was in a market near my office in London. The stall was selling Christmas trees: "Xma's trees".

Who is Xma?

Or even the correct use of Hippostrofeez

There are two things that have me throwing things at the TV

1) Pronouncing the word 'cache' as "cash-ai"

2) Using 'begs the question' [the logical fallacy] instead of 'raises the question' [as in reveals another issue]

Drives me insane
