We live in the UK but have had a house in Peyia for the last 6 years. We want to change our Cyprus bank account as we are unhappy with our current bank. Can anyone recommend a bank (preferably with a branch located in Peyia) that we can open an account online & manage from the UK. We only use the account to pay utility bills by direct debit.

I don't know of any such bank.
However, your UK Bank might have a Cyprus Bank they have some form of loose partnership
with; ask them.
They might be able to get an account opened for you.
Geoff.

Check out the Bank of Cyprus (UK), many of us who were dumped by Barclays earlier this year as we weren't rich enough are managing our UK financial affairs very well with these guys!

Search online for details.

There are only 2 banks in Peyia...the Hellenic and the Co-op
There is a Bank of Cyprus in Coral Bay

You can use any ATM though with any bank's cards albeit for a small charge.

If you only use your Cyprus account to "to pay utility bills by direct debit." would it not just be as easy to set that up with your UK bank? I know that HBOS offer this service although you would need the recipients full details including IBAN number; account number etc

Excellent advice. All utility Companies will give you their IBAN No. if you ask them (by email).

it should be possible to pay direct using Transferwise using the iban / bic of the accounts you wish to pay and thus get the benefit of far better than bank FX rates.

worth a punt I think

My local council, Kouklia, enable you to pay property tax and water rates on the JCC Smart website by way of c/c. Takes just a minute or two. Most of the bigger councils do.

Do it here for Peyia: https://www.jccsmart.com/PegeiaMun/Welcome/Index/23712029

The electricty can be paid too, here: https://www.jccsmart.com

The OP asked if it possible to "open an account on line"

I very much doubt this.

When you are next over, I would suggest you will need to pop into a branch in person, with the required documentation.

For funding your Cyprus bank account, I can't say that I would recommend transmitting money from a UK bank to your Cyprus bank - because of sending bank fees and receiving bank fees.

Assuming that you have the "right" UK debit card, just withdraw cash from your Cyprus bank's ATM and then pay in the cash over the counter into your Cyprus bank account.

Setting up direct debits from your Cyprus bank account costs very little, and after set up there is no monthly cost.
