My eldest son has just informed me that he'd like a Sony Playstation 3 for his 16th birthday on the 28th April but I've been looking at the prices & these things cost £299GBP which I find very expensive indeed

On looking at their website, I see they play DVD's & Blu-ray discs in HD quality, so does this mean you need a HD ready TV to use them properly or is a bog standard TV qually as good

I'd like to get him what he wants as its it 16th but I'm not willing to pay that much, so if anyone knows of a cheaper place to get one, please let me know

An HD ready screen will give the better quality playback but isn't a system requirement, should have SCART connector as well for SD playback.

Try to "sell him" the Xbox360 which is a little less now but the PS3 is certainly the long term "must have" next generation console ... best to give him what he wants

I'd love to give him what he wants as its his 16th BD but I just can't afford that sort of present right now, so I was hoping that the HD thing would be an escape for me

Other problem is, if I did get that for him, his brother who is 14 in May will want something similar

So, I may have to tell a wee porkie me thinks

They are still pretty pricey at the moment. I bought mine from Carrefour and I think it was £225 or £250 ish.
