Hi, we have a property in cyprus but due to work commitments i cant spend as much time there as i would like. what i would like to know is can i, as a non resident buy a car and keep it there to cut out the car hire costs i incur several times a year.

We as none residents bought a car in 2008, there was a shop in Paphos who saw to all the registration details, the address we gave was the house we rented.

Absolutely you can. Two of my near neighbours live in the UK and have holiday homes out here. Both leave cars in their garage/car ports when they're not here.

However, if you do your sums, I think you'll find that renting beats buying and maintaining every time. I'm thinking: initial capital outlay, insurance, road tax, maintenance, etc, etc. Less hassle when the time comes to sell/upgrade your car too.

Anyone can buy a car here so long as it is tax paid.

If you buy a new car then it will suffer depreciation as any car will, but if you buy a used one then it can make economic sense as the car will retain a better percentage of its value.

Many people also prefer coming out to their own car so that you know exactly what you are getting.

Unless you have a helpful neighbour though you will probably have to deal with flay tyres and batteries every time that you come!

The road tax depends on engine size and the MOT lasts for two years and is €34.

Just to add, any engine size below 1.6 ltr is relatively cheap for road tax, ie 1.6ltr is around €100 per year, a 2ltr s a lot more getting nearer to €250 per year.
The taxation system is about to change through EU pressure and road tax will be based on CO2 emissions just like in the UK.
Ive not seen the tariff yet but older cars will cost more to tax than their modern equivalents.
