The difference is in the strength and quantity used. For instance, I never pour bleach/bleachy water down the drain or use strong Harpic-type toilet cleaners. Disinfectant is poured onto a wodge of loo roll which is binned after use. We feed the pit from time to time with Spurgo Biologico (Italian stuff specially for septic tanks, readily available from One-Stop) or the occasional tub of natural yoghurt (left to get furry and Porton-Downish).
