What do pet´s names tell us?

A survey by Greenbee Pet Insurance is suggesting that more and more people see their dogs as a "valued family member", they are giving them human instead of canine names.

Names like Fido, Patch or Rover are being replaced by "human" names like Max, Alfie and Millie.

A survey of more than 12,000 owners indicates that dogs are increasingly being thought of as part of the family with the entire top 10 most popular dog names consisting wholly of human names.

Owners are being influenced by celebrities, sports stars and their favourite snacks, with names like Dizzee Rascal, Ronaldo and Kit Kat proving popular choices, the survey found.

And we all know about the bull breeds we sometimes encounter called Tyson, Blade, Psycho, etc which are also more of a reflection on the owners than the animal.

We all know what our companion animals mean to us - and what they give us, but I wonder if this is just a fashion, as any name can become more or less popular over time, or is it because people are increasingly considering their pets as "members of the family"?

What do you think and how did you decide on your pet´s name?

Top 6 Dogs´ Names
1. Molly
2. Poppy
3. Charlie
4. Max
5. Alfie
6. Millie

My last 2 dogs ( in the UK ) were Benson & Cleo. Both boxers.

Here in Paphos, my dog is called Bailey.

None of them in the Top Six.

When I came out of the RAF after 22 years as a SNCO I had a Cavalier King Charles dog 'in civvie street' and I called him 'SIR'. Yes I could finally say 'Come here SIR' :celebrate :celebrate

Unfortunatly he had a early demise at only 8 years old :(

My brother has just got a rescue dog in the UK, called Finlay. When I was little I got a dog for my 7th birthday, and I called him Chum, and he lived til he was 18.

Some friends of mine and Shirls have 3 dogs - and I think they have fantastic names.

They are

Ruth

Betty

Colin

I think that's fantastic, and always makes me laugh when I think of them.

I wanted to call our current Cyprus poodle after the one in the Film 'The Jerk' starring Steve Martin. 'Shythead', but wife talked me out of it so I call her 'Hey bawheid' but I think shes actually another Molly

Strange one this,as we have 2 dogs (both from PAWS)
We know more of the dogs names than we do the owners/walkers !!!!!
Dog walkers walk past our fence every day and say hello to Billy and Dylan, both me and my wife say whos that ??????
the answer is allways the same ..................its X or Y s mum or dad !!!!!

Notice the bit mum or dad and not owner !!!!!

If anyone can tell me the name of the father of a g.s/cross called max that live in the c.y. king village, this would be of great help.
My wife thinks hes called Kieth(his wife i have no idea)
Met them every day for the last 2 years, but ive no idea as to what his true name is ??????????????

Its a dogs life !!

No dogs here, but had 4 at one stage in SA:

Snowy
Gizmo
Pebbles
Spike

There was actually a rationale behind our choices - all were cartoon/film characters.

A friend of ours in Joburg actually called her dog Defa (as in D for Dog)!

Mine had to be called LEELA for obvious reasons..................Leela is a one eyed orphan alien from Futurama, I think she suits her name tho :-)
