Post subject:  visa requirement for non-EU person

I am British, presently living in the Philippines, but I am planning to visit Cyprus to visit my parents in the next couple of months. I would like to bring my Filipina wife with me. I assume that as she is not an EU citizen she will require a visa from the Cypriot Embassy in the Philippines in order to be allowed entry to Cyprus. Has anyone had experience of doing this? We may decide to stay in Cyprus, can visas for non-EU persons be extended? I have heard many different stories, so would actually like to hear from somebody who has done it. thanks

Since my original post I have been studying the Cypriot Embassy website. In it they list the requirements for a Filipina to obtain an "entry visa". As I understand it, an entry visa can be issued from the Cypriot Embassy here in the Philippines. It can be either a short stay, or long stay visa. The length of the stay must be specified on application, and she will have to have a return ticket to the Philippines. She has to provide a letter of invitation from a Cypriot resident (poss my parents) stating that they will provide financial support, and agree to cover any possible medical expenses that may be incurred during her stay. They also have to provide copies of bank statements showing they have the means to cover financial support. That these documents must be endorsed/notarized be a Cypriot attorney before being submitted with the visa application and a fee of 34 Euros. with the application form and her passport.
This would seem acceptable if it were just a filipina coming to Cyprus, but it seems a little "over the top" for the wife of a british person accompanying her husband on holiday!. It seems to me that the website is just giving advice to Filipinas trying to visit Cyprus. As usual there is no response on the telephone, and any e-mails I have sent just get the same website advice. I am sure that somebody out there can tell me if this website info is accurate. thanks again

My experience isn't the same as I married a Philipino citizen who was already here in Cyprus. The marriage took place here which made things so much simpler.

There is no doubt that your wife will require a visa for a visit, but I don't know what else they will want. There could be a demand for medical insurance, bank guarantee, letter of invitation, certified copies of the marriage certificate, copies of passports, proof of funds. Frankly, all the usual stuff. The best thing would be for your parents to pop up to immigration and have a chat. I always found them to be verry helpful if approached in a friendly way. Also, why not pop to the Cypriot embasy in Manilla and have a chat as well. The more information you get the better it will be. Don't bother with email and phone calls. It just doesn't work.

As to settling here permanently once you are here, it is a similar route to an EU person applying for residency. However, she will need more paperwork than you and she may have to return to the Philipines for some time while it is sorted out. Be aware there may well be a reluctance to say yes. You would get your permanent residency certificate on the day. She would get a 5 year renewable residency certificate after a wait of 6 months.

Hope this helps somewhat.

I have been successful in obtaining a 12 month visa for my Filipina wife to come with me to Cyprus. If there are any other ex-pats with a Filipina wife?girlfriend? please let me know, as my wife would like to meet other Filipinas in Paphos. We are arriving early September.
thanks.
