OVER half of all registered vehicle owners have failed to renew their road licence even though the deadline is tomorrow, the head of the road transport department, Sotiris Kolettas said yesterday.
“You understand that within two days, even if everyone rushes to renew their licences it would be impossible for the system to respond,” Kolettas said.
Kolettas said that fewer than 300,000 drivers had renewed their licences and there was “no intention to extend the deadline”.
Kolettas urged drivers to register their vehicles “as soon as possible” adding that come Wednesday, the police and road transport officials could start road checks to report maverick drivers.
Failing to renew a vehicle’s road licence for three consecutive years turns the money owed into a civil debt, payable at court, and annuls the car’s registration forcing drivers to pay to register their car again, Kolettas said.
Kolettas said people could pay online or in person at the road transport department, their banks or at any citizen’s service centre.
He said it was a shame that some people ended up paying hundreds of euros “because they did not fulfil their obligation” to pay some €50 a year.
