Post subject:  Diane's moving diary

My sister announced at the dinner table on Christmas day that she was moving to Cyprus my initial reaction was to ask if I could come too, her answer was yes that she was starting her own business and I could have a job if I wanted one. Original plans were for me to move here in September but its now been moved forward to June.

I came out 2 weeks ago and started looking for somewhere to live, as a single woman my first thoughts were that I needed somewhere that had a communal pool, I felt I needed people around me, so an apartment or townhouse would suit me fine but on viewing it appeared I could be the only person living there so i changed my plans and started to look at villa's and in my second week found one I feel in love with. I am renting so its not such a huge decision and if I have made a bad choice I could always move on.

I go back to the UK tonight and return to work on Wednesday to hand in my notice, I will work a month and then return back and start my new life, I'm very excited and am really looking forward to it all.

My Daughters, Sophie 22 and Emily 19 are staying in the UK but are both looking forward to holidays out here, I have a feeling I will miss them terribly but with me travelling back to the UK a few times a year and them travelling here hopefully we will still see each other quite often

I will keep you updated on how things go over the next few weeks and look forward to meeting you all at the June meet (so make it a good one :D )

Bye for now

Diane x

Diane

Nice one - you will love it here - well I do. I moved over here in 2006, on my own, and have a far better life here than I would ever have had in the UK. I have a good social life, love going to the taverna meets, and have a very happy life here. I live in a small complex of 8 bungalows around a communal pool, and have excellent neighbours. I feel safe here - and as I'm sure you're aware, that is something that more and more you don't feel in the UK. I can walk around here at night on my own, and not feel threatened.

Get yourself over here, life's too short to say "I wish I had . . . . ."

Look forward to meeting you at the taverna night, but any questions, just give us a shout - and yes, I can lift boxes, I've just shifted 3 tons of gravel so I can do anything.

Just popped in to update:

Today I handed in my notice at work so leave 5th June, I also booked my flight back to Cyprus on Monday 8th June, bringing 7 items of luggage with BA, now need to sort how I get luggage to Gatwick and also from Pathos to villa............anyone have a pride of donkeys (is pride just lions :doh)

So I feel another step closer :bounce

Isn't it a great feeling handing your notice in? Well, I loved doing it.

7th of June is a Sunday, so provided you don't land at stupid o'clock I could pick you up. The back seat of my car drops down making it into a kind of estate car, so it would probably fit in there. Let me know if that would help - unfortunately can't help about getting it down to Gatwick though

Oh, and by the way - it's Paphos or Pafos, please not Pathos  sorry, but I'm sure it's a pet hate for most of us Paphians.

AArrrggghhh I keep spelling it wrong and I do know the way to spell it which makes it even more daft.........apologies.........oh and if you ever meet my Mother she says Papos lol so I will apologise for her in advance

Thanks for the offer of help but I couldn't get the Sunday flight so opted for the Monday, I know bit of a bummer that I miss a day there!

The shopping and the packing starts tomorrow, how do you get your whole life into a few boxes and a couple of suitcases, feels like a right challenge

How did you all decide what to bring and what to leave behind??

I was pretty ruthless - sold/chucked out just about everything and arrived with just a single suitcase - complete fresh start!

I do still have a fair bit of stuff stashed in the loft at my parents' house should I ever need it though...

Post subject:  Re: Diane's moving diary

OMG! Started packing today, 2 big boxes and a suitcase already and I feel I haven't started yet...................so much for traveling light!! (not forgetting the 6 boxes I snuck onto my Sisters container!!)

Only booked 7 items onto flight

May need more donkeys Jean!! :manic :manic :manic although still haven't worked out how I get it all from carosel to car lol

Felt quite daunted by it all this morning, not fun sorting everything by yourself, thought my Daughter may have given me a hand but in true teenager style she went out, got hammered, didn't come home until 7.30am and still hasn't surfaced yet!!

I really don't know how people pack up everything, go through house selling, organise pet shipments, the whole works!! I just have me to worry about so will stop moaning and continue the packing!!

Post subject:  Re: Diane's moving diary

A quick question:

Did anyone use BA and bring boxes with them on their flight, do you know if you collect them from the carosel or from somewhere else and do they have porters to help at Paphos airport?

I'm panicing a bit here, wish I had shipped now but there is no way I'm unpacking everything to list all items in boxes

Thank you

Post subject:  Re: Diane's moving diary

There's rollers at the back of arrivals where boxes come out. I would guess there.
Paphos arrivals is pretty small, there's only 3 (or 4) carousels so don't worry about it.

I don't if anyone will have that much experience with it as the airport is only a few months old.

Author:  sevener [ Mon May 25, 2009 8:00 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Diane's moving diary

I can't comment regarding the new airport but I doubt it is any better than the old regarding assistance.

When we arrived we had suitcases etc. and 2 dogs in crates brought over in the hold of the plane. They were dumped in the baggage hall and we were left, with no assistance, to try to get them out of the airport. we were told in no uncertain terms we were NOT allowed to remove them from their travel cages until we were outside the terminal.

The scenario was.... 2 people, 2 baggage trolleys with suitcases on and 2 dogs in cages that would not fit on trolleys and were too cumbersome to lift in a crowded airport...... Result..... Chaos....

We received no assistance from the airport personnel and there were no porters at the airport.

They don't make it easy.....

Hi Diane

You may be lucky to find someone to help you, but dont rely on it!!

I'm sure some kind person will be available to give you a hand though, just smile sweetly.......

Looks like I will have to use my flirting skills then lol

I think it will take 4 trollies at least so if someone doesn't help me then I just won't be able to move

I treated myself and have booked a Club Class ticket as its only one way, I thought this may also get me a bit more assistance.................time will tell!!

I live at 600+ Meters above sea level and mine is about 78 - 80 deg F at present.
I would imagine those in Paphos are around 82 - 84 or hotter depending on how sheltered/sunny they are.
Anything over about 72 is swimable but not for long periods. :D

Post subject:  Re: Diane's moving diary

Sorry need to have a rant and stamp my feet for a minute, then maybe I will feel better!!

Feeling rather lonely and isolated today, not one single friend or member of my family has offered to help me pack up my things, I feel like I have been doing this alone for weeks!! Now I am always the first person to offer help to others so I suppose thats why I am finding it strange. I have got the help of my ex to get me and my stuff to the airport but thats probably because he wants to be sure im going! I have now lost motivation, although most of packing done I still need to box things up in the house that my Daughter doesn't really want or need, she can't help she has gone away for weekend with her Dad

I'm normally in control and organised and I feel I am losing the plot, any guidance greatfully accepted

And on a final note, I must thank Jean for her offers of help at the Cyprus end, we haven't even met and she is supporting me more than life long friends here :grouphug

:madcow RANT OVER..............and thank you for listening

Maybe they are too upset at you going for them to come and help you - you never know people act in very mysterious ways.

Maybe they are thinking about how much the are gonna miss you -

So Diane

It's about 12 days to go, and now the feeling sick starts  The doubts start to kick in - am I doing the right thing? Will I be able to have a good life? Will I make any friends?

The answer to all these questions is YES

I had all the doubts and fears, the feeling sick, the nervous anticipation, the sleepless nights, the "am I doing the right thing", but honestly, hand on heart, this is the best thing I have EVER done. I love my life over here, granted I have my pensions now, and if the exchange rate ever picks up it will be even better, but the whole lifestyle is so much more relaxed, the pace of life is better, and I feel so much healthier. These forums (or is it forii  ) are a wonderful way to meet people, especially PP as we have our regular monthly taverna nights, and now the nice weather is here and people are returning on holiday, we will be having more ladies coffee meets.

Just keep going, head down, doing the packing and sorting, Cyprus is going nowhere, and if you pm me your flight details nearer the time, I will see you (and all your luggage) at the airport on the 8th. :greetings

Just enjoy your last week and look forward to the next chapter of your life with friends you haven't even met yet.
