First - I am not a gardener of any description - my wife is, but not of the edible stuff, so, I really want to grow my own produce and would like to know when to plant out things like carrots, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, asparagus, sweetcorn, cauliflower, lettuce, onion, potatoes., and anything else that grows well here.

I know veg and salad stuff is cheap but I want to grow my own anyway.

I have created one raised bed so far, about 3 metres x 1.2metres, and intend building 7 more, so plenty of space for home use growing.

Any advice, particularly on when to plant out gratefully received.

Chris

Wwe planted tomatoes from seed around June last year in pots and were harvesting after 6 weeks and still picking at Christmas. A few weeks ago we planted from seed lettuce, cherry tomatoes, rocket, cucumber, basil. We are now enjoying sweet freshly picked lettuce+rocket in our salad and the cucumber is soon to flower, the tomatoes are now flowering so a month or so and will have tomatoes hopefully for most of the year. We have had a few tomatoe deliveries from a friend of my mother-in-law so presumably they can be grown from seed from March or earlier if in greenhouses !? We ate potatoes (very small :( ) at Easter this year which had been planted just before Christmas, and ate potatoes at Christmas planted in August !!

Some say you can grow anything all year around here but strawberries we tried haven't germinated yet, and last year our lettuce just didn't get going - both seeds planted in late June(last year) so next year i`m gonna aim to plant seeds outside around March.

If you find a good resource for growing and maintaining ANYTHING in Cyprus then let me know as i`m a beginner to gardening/growing and it appears to be trial and error :)

Patricia Jordan has written a few books on gardening on cyprus. they're usually clear to read and with good photos. The latest one is the "Cyprus Orchard" which covers growing fruit and veggies. She's also done one on growing in pots and general one.
The books are on sale at the book shop called Kyriako ( or something similar!) which is a fantastic book shop on the same side as carrefore but much nearer to the Papantonio traffic lights.17 euro. Also i think also found at Hernes in coral bay sometimes.
