Hi ALL - Theres NOT a Gardening Section yet, so I thought I would put this here - untill it can be moved (Admin!!!).

My friend who is also called Stuart and I are starting a vegetable/fruit garden for our son’s in the New Year.

Stuart H’ comes from a farming background, so he does know some of the UK basics!

This project is mainly for our son’s, but also a way for us to relax from the pressures of work! --- Who said living & working in Cyprus would be less stressful???

We have a LARGE plot of land to use (about half 1 acre (ish).

So we need LOTS of advice, what to plant, when to plant it, what will be Fun & Educational for the boys – young and OLD!!!

We are also thinking about getting some chickens for their eggs, but we need to check out the rules about that yet…

last year I grew some hot chillies on the balcony..
I had four plants and got loads from them..
Also had a go at tomatoes they never worked..
I had 5 plants in 1 grow bag , your only supposed to have 2 per bag never mind,,, next year

Hi Stuart...and Merry Christmas to you and your family! One plant you can very easily grow are Passion Fruit. Once planted, so easy to cultivate (just water adequately!). The fruit, which you should have after just a year are to die for. They are a climbing plant and are ideal for a covered walkway, or patio. Trees like oranges and lemons take such a time to come to fruit, unless you buy very mature trees. We treasure figs straight from the fig tree. Grape vines again can take 2/3 years to be productive. As I write this I realise I'm not really giving you any productive advice, but your idea is a great one and the kids will love watching everything grow and come to fruit. Many years ago we used to keep hens, ducks and geese (they're a delight too) for the eggs, but I've forgotten pretty much everything I learned. Good luck to you! Lloyd

dont buy your fruit trees from garden centres.
there is a goverment place for buying trees,
just for fruit growers, at a very cheap price ..

I can tell you that you can only keep chickens
in the villages, not towns..
They only started to enforce this law
in the last couple of years..
I read of many people being taken to the courts..
(cypriots) now theres a first ...

Would certainly second the Passion Fruit .... my "crop" that flowerd in August have very slowly started to ripen, but as Yakflyer will know the fruit that flowers in early year ripens in summer. We have done nothing but water and cut back heavily, and my god this plant grows like there is no tomorrow. Plant it over a metal framework to give some shelter from the sun !

Tomatoes must be an easy one to choose but make sure the plants have a decent framework to support in the wind.

Courgettes seemed easy enough if you seed at the right time and have water to spare, use pegs to keep them from flying around !

What's the irrigation situation like? have you a well? if not has your neighbour? it may be worth finding out, as this determines how sucessful you will be!

while you're chatting to neighbouring farmers, have a look at what they're growing; your soil is most likely to be similar, and if there is a "cash crop" that will grow in it, they'll have found it already

hi there!
I used to keep chickens in the uk (Lavender Aracanas), mostly for the eggs but occassionally for meat if we had too many cockerels. The girls loved it and really miss them! We had an allotment too.
I have plenty of beginner books and odd bits of equipment you might want to borrow in exchange for letting me and the girls have a few eggs now and again, and the opportunity to look after them over holidays? We're stuck in a house with no garden and its driving me nuts...

Hi,
Update on my fruit trees - managed to get to the Government fruit farm yesterday. As Neil said, the man was very nice and helpful - but they have stopped selling the fruit trees now for the season - starts November and ends mid-March - all he had left were the stock for production of next year's crops.
However, he directed me to the Garden Centre further along the road - George Charalambous - what a fantastic place -it's huge, with so much good stock and such helpful staff. We came away with a Green Fig and a Pomegranate [and a Vibernum] They hadn't heard of a Kiwi, but I've to 'phone next week. The problem with Kiwi, you need two - one male and one female. Still to get a Cherry - or maybe I'll get an Apricot. Will definitely be going back there.

just to let you know , that guy told me you have to be careful with cherry trees they need
to be at a certain alltitude ..
how much were the trees from the garden centre along the road .. ?

well the goverment fruit tree place is on the airport road just past Akis taverna, so the garden centre must be on the same road (as there is only one) a little further along..
at an educated guess..
but Ruth shoud be along later to confirm

Hi,
Yes the George Charalambous Garden Centre is further along the old airport road after the Government place on the right and the Avis taverna on the left. It's about a mile along on the right hand side. There is another Garden Centre before the Government place, on the right, but we didn't go in this visit.
Cost of the trees are much more expensive, but more mature €17 and €18 for the Fig and Pomegranate [our Muktar called in to see us yesrerday and said they were good varieties and good quality]
Have researched the Cherry Growing, Neil, and they grow well at 800 - 1750 metres and do not like Humidity, so should grow in Theletra OK [ there are some in the village gardens. Same with Kiwi - dislike Humidity.
