my landlord has recently rotovated a small plot for me (bless him) but I can see that the soil, even though it supports a few citrus trees, is very poor quality, what can I use to enrich the soil to grow a few vegetables (dig for victory and all that) Farmyard manure as we know it is very "thin on the ground" any suggestions would be very welcome. Having said that, we are not as agile on our feet as previously, and a lot of heavy digging/forking is not on the cards, so any other suggestions would be very welcome (swap for some veggies - when they grow!!!!) |

The only thing I can suggest is when planting add a little decent soil to the hole. Not as much hard work as forking over the whole plot etc. Other than that I am not sure what to suggest. |

Goat manure is plentiful and cheap. Sometimes free. You would need to collect it from the goat farms though. Failing that London road are selling large 4 cubic foot bags of compressed compost at €20 a bale. I’ve used a mixture of the two above. You would need to spread it then rotovate it in. Brian |

You could feed the soil by using a multi-purpose fertiliser that you dissolve in a watering can - if you do it in a high concentration it should enrich the soil with little physical effort - also make sure you get some nitrogen to sprinkle and some iron chelate as a top up for the fertiliser chris |

Are you sure its poor quality soil? By UK standards most soil here looks poor, but the way everything grows I suggest that its not. With the right feeding your veg should prosper. Pete |

A good tip to add iron into any plant is you know the really cheap pads you get in the supermarket like brillo pads without the soap on it, put a couple of those near roots - great for giving iron to any plant and cheap as chips. |
