Miracle brings baby back to life after almost drowning

A BABY boy, only 11 months old, was brought back to life by Paphos doctors yesterday after being unconscious for an hour following a near drowning.

The infant had been swept from his mother’s arms as they bathed in the sea off Kissonerga in Paphos. He was still fighting for life at Nicosia General hospital last night.

At first the baby was thought to have no chance of survival given that he was unconscious for almost an hour, but the doctors at Paphos General Hospital refused to give up and eventually revived him after enormous efforts in what some called a miracle.

Paediatricians, anaesthesiologists and First Aid doctors all fought to revive the 11-month-old and succeeded after an hour of attempts the baby started breathing again.

“The baby was brought to the hospital with no vital signs, no pulse, he wasn’t breathing and was stiff with the cold,” said Marios Philippou, Head of the First Aid Department at Paphos General Hospital.

According to police reports, the baby’s mother, who is Russian, went into the sea while holding him in her arms.

Suddenly a huge wave swept over both of them and caused her to let go of the child. ”The baby was unconscious in the water for a long time before he was brought out,” Philippou added. He said the baby was brought to the hospital around 10am.

Police said when the mother realised that her son was no longer in her arms, she began to scream hysterically, calling for help. People close by rushed to help her and after several minutes found the baby unconscious at the bottom of the sea.

The baby’s mother is in not in a serious condition but was admitted to Paphos General Hospital, where she has been kept in overnight, Philippou said.
