Paphos mayor under pressure PAPHOS MAYOR Savvas Vergas has been given a dressing down by Archbishop Chrysostomos II over the continuing road works, which the Primate says are causing problems in the tourist areas. According to Radio Pafos, the Archbishop had a short meeting with the mayor during a break in the memorial service for local hero, Chrystodoulos Polydorou, in Chlorakas. The Archbishop is reported to have said such works shouldn’t be taking place “during the middle of high season, and in a year of economic crisis”. The mayor confirmed on the radio that he had discussed the matter with Chrysostomos II, and that they had also discussed the matter of delays in the sewerage works in Paphos. The works in Chlorakas were the scene of a tragic death last week when a British tourist fell down a deep ditch, which had been excavated as part of the ongoing project. Vergas added that the original date of the upgrading works in front of the hotels in Kato Paphos, would have seen them completed before the start of summer, but that “unforeseen circumstances had delayed the contractors”. The Archbishop blamed the municipality for the delay on the seafront road works and added that hoteliers in the area, who are renting from the church are now requesting lower rents, not only because of the poor state of the economy, but also because of the adverse affect the seafront works are having on their businesses. Pressure on the mayor continued from other quarters yesterday as angry taxi drivers demonstrated outside Paphos municipality, demanding the creation of more taxi ranks within the town. The disgruntled protesters blocked the road around the town hall with their taxis, prevent any access and disrupting the flow of traffic. Taxi drivers claim the newly upgraded seafront area in Kato Paphos and around Ayiou Antoniou Street limits their presence and has resulted in a huge drop in clientele. Responding to their demands, the mayor pointed out that taxis had backed the idea to pedestrianise the area and that they have two taxi ranks at each end of the seafront street, which is currently closed to traffic for the summer months. The drivers agreed to disperse after being given assurances that the matter of enlarging the smaller rank would be discussed during last night’s council meeting. Copyright © Cyprus Mail 2009 |

It would be nice if the works could be expedited rapidly, but I would prefer a good robust job done which will stand the test rather than remedial works every year. No sympathy for the taxi drivers. If they didnt cheat so much (especially airport ones) then we would have better responses to them. Someone phoned me and said the taxi drivers are revolting, I said, yes arent they! |
