ANGRY BUS company employees parked their vehicles along Poseidonos avenue in Paphos yesterday to protest to the road’s closure during the summer months. Aleppa bus company charges that the closure of the newly upgraded seafront road for four months during the summer is bad for their business. Spokesman, Giorgos Ioannides, also expressed the company’s displeasure at the presence of a taxi rank in the area, while pointing out there is no bus stop along the same stretch of road. He said Paphos mayor Savvas Vergas is “against the bus service” and seems to favour the taxi drivers. Responding to the allegations, Vergas said he was obliged to take into account the good of the entire town and pointed out that the bus company was also a private enterprise. The newly upgraded seafront road has been the scene of much controversy with some demanding its opening to traffic and some insisting it should be a pedestrian only zone. Following the recommendation of a Greek expert who studied the area, it was decided to close traffic during the day and evening for four months over the summer and on Sundays throughout the year. It had been hoped that these new measures would satisfy everyone. |
