The health ministry is ruling out adopting tougher restrictions to contain the coronavirus outbreak for now, opting instead to give time for the current measures to deliver results, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Monday citing reliable information.

Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantelas is due to meet the epidemiologists on Tuesday to review the situation. Although daily new infections have remained stuck at above 3,000 and state hospitals have seen an uptick in infections, widespread testing ahead of Monday’s reopening of the schools has pushed down the positivity rate and raised a glimmer of hope that the fifth wave may be peaking.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, the health ministry was choosing to adopt a wait-and-see attitude to give time for stricter measures approved last week to kick in.

An authoritative source told CNA that the next few days were “critical”. The health ministry was closely monitoring the epidemiological situation and would decide whether restrictions needed to be tightened.
