Government sources on Tuesday ruled out a lockdown as advisors and President Nicos Anastasiades deliberated tighter measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus amid a surge in daily infections.

The meeting began at 6.30pm following a separate meeting earlier between the coronavirus advisory team and Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantelas, where options for new measures were discussed.

Aside from briefing the president on the epidemiological situation, advisors were expected to finalise a set of proposed measures to discuss in the presence of ministers whose responsibilities will be affected.

With the daily infection rate rocketing, forcing thousands of people who are either cases or contacts into isolation, it is expected that experts will recommend tighter measures though a lockdown does not appear to be among the options.

The spike has not caused hospital admissions to rise as in previous waves, which gives authorities some leeway for the time being at least.
