If you’e still hanging with friends, going to restaurants/bars, and acting like this isn’t a big deal, get your doodoo together. The read the information taken from an Italian citizen. “To the rest of the world, you have no idea what’s coming.”

As I think everybody knows, Italy is on quarantine because of the coronavirus outbreak. This situation is bad, but what’s worse is seeing the rest of the world behaving as if it isn’t going to happen to them. We know what you’re thinking because we were in your place too. Let’s see how things developed…

STAGE 1:
You know that coronavirus exists, and the first cases begin to appear in your country. Well, nothing to worry about, it’s just a bad flu! I’m not 75+yo so what could possibly happen to me? I’m safe, everybody is overreacting, what’s the need to go out with masks and stock toilet paper? I’m going to live my life as usual, there’s no need to freak out.

STAGE 2:
The number of cases begins to be significant. They declare “red zone” and quarantine one or two small cities where they found the first cases and a lot of people were infected (Feb 22nd). Well that’s sad and somewhat worrisome but they’re taking care of it so nothing to panic about. There are some deaths but they’re all old people so the media is just creating panic for views, how shameful. People lead their life as usual.. I’m not going to stop going out and meeting my friends am I? It’s not going to get me. Everybody’s fine here.

STAGE 3: The number of cases is rapidly going up. They almost doubled in one day. There’s more deaths they declare red zones and quarantine the 4 regions where the majority of cases are registered (March 7).

In Italy 25% of the county is under quarantine. Schools and universities are closed in these areas but bars, work places, restaurants and so on are still open. The decree gets released by some newspaper before it should, so around 10k people from the red zone escape from the area that same night to return to their homes in the rest of Italy (this will be important later). Most of the population of the remaining 75% of Italy still does what it always does.

They still don’t realise the seriousness of the situation. Everywhere you turn people advise to wash your hands and limit going out, large groups are forbidden, every 5 minutes on TV they remind you of these rules. But it still hasn’t settled in people’s mind.

STAGE 4:
The number of cases is heavily increasing. Schools and universities are closed everywhere for at least a month. It’s a national health emergency. Hospitals are at capacity, entire units are cleared to make space for coronavirus patients. There aren’t enough doctors and nurses. They’re calling retired ones and those in their last 2 years of university. There’s no shifts any more, just work as much as you can. Of course doctors and nurses are getting infected, spreading it to their families.

There’s too many cases of pneumonia, too many people who need ICU and not enough places for everyone. At this point is like being at war: doctors have to choose who to treat based on their survival chance. That means that the elderly and trauma/stroke patients can’t get treated because corona cases have priority. There’s not enough resources for everybody so they have to be distributed for best outcome. I wish I was joking but it’s literally what has happened. People have died because there wasn’t any more space.

I have a doctor friend who called me devastated because he had to let 3 people die that day. Nurses crying because they see people dying and can’t do anything aside from offering some oxygen. A friend’s relative died yesterday of corona because they couldn’t treat him. It’s chaos, the system is collapsing. Coronavirus and the crisis it’s provoking is all you hear about everywhere.

STAGE 5:
Remember the 10k idiot who ran from the red zone to the rest of Italy? Well, the entire country has to be declared under quarantine (March 9). The goal is to delay the spreading of the virus as much as possible. People can go to work, do grocery shopping, go to the pharmacy, and all businesses are still open because otherwise the economy would collapse (it already is), but you can’t move from your commune unless you have a valid reason.

Now there’s fear, you see a lot of people with masks and gloves around but there are still are people who think that they’re invincible, who go to restaurants in large groups, hang out with friends to drink and so on.

STAGE 6:
2 days later, it’s announced that all (most) businesses are closed: Bars, restaurants, shopping centers, all kinds of shops etc. Everything except supermarkets and pharmacies. You can move around only if you have certification with you. The certification is an official document where you declare your name, where you’re coming from, where you’re going and what for. There are a lot of police check points.

If you’re found outside without a valid reason you risk a fine up to €206. If you’re a known positive patient you risk from 1 to 12 years of jail for homicide .

The certificate they mention for going out is also in use in France , but they do say you can hand write your own .

"You can write the same information by hand on a “blank sheet of paper”, Mr Castaner said. The paper must include your name, date of birth, address, and specific reason for your trip. It must then be sign ."

I wonder if it will come in force in Cyprus ?

And from the Cyprus Mail.

President Nicos Anastasiades on Monday announced restrictions in circulation and closures of public areas including churches in a bid to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The measures will be in force between Tuesday at 6pm and April 13.

“The state will be relentless against those who violate the orders,” he said during a public address on Monday evening.

People will be asked to present identity cards or passports.

Violators will be fine €150.

The president said circulation is banned unless it concerns work, purchase of supplies, doctor visits, pharmacy visits, and banks, or to aid vulnerable groups.

Parks, picnic areas, beaches, reservoirs, are off limits. Visits to churches and mosques are banned. Also banned are Easter bonfire.

Shops except those selling necessities will close.

Here's what he said:-

President Nicos Anastasiades on Monday announced draconian measures including restrictions in movement and the closures of public places, as the government seeks to stop the spread of the coronavirus, which totalled 155 cases island-wide.

“An out-of-control spread of the cases will lead to the collapse of the health system, which cannot respond to the needs that will be created irrespective of how good its structure is,” he said during a televised address on Monday evening.

“I cannot conceive that we can be led to the scenes seen in Italy and Spain where doctors are forced to select who lives and who will be left to die.”

The president said that despite previous measures, the sacrifice of thousands of workers, the pain felt by parents and children who remained abroad, a section of the public displayed a lack of discipline, self-respect, responsibility and solidarity with their fellow humans.

“Behaviours that expose the entire population to mortal danger,” he said, referring to the scenes of crowded parks on Sunday despite the government’s plea for people to stay at home.

As part of the fresh measures, the government banned unnecessary movement from 6pm on Tuesday until April 13, unless it concerned work, the purchase of supplies, doctor and pharmacy visits, or going to a bank if an online transaction is impossible.

Also exempted are people who provide assistance to vulnerable groups and first-degree relatives attending funerals, weddings, or baptisms, provided they do not exceed 10 people.

Exercising and walking a dog are also allowed as long as they do not exceed two people and they are restricted to the area around their residences.

Everyone outside must carry their ID or passport and additional proof regarding their business,

Starting Tuesday 6pm and until April 13, the government will shut parks, play areas, open sports facilities, public meeting places – including squares, reservoirs, picnic areas, beaches, marinas, open markets and bazaars.

Visits to churches, mosques, and other religious venues were also banned.

All retailers will suspend operation apart from those included in a health ministry order: companies selling equipment for the handicapped, medical equipment, opticians, hearing aids, garages, tyre shops, bicycle shops, dry cleaners, post and courier officers, telecom companies – bill payment and repairs – car dealerships, flower shops, funeral parlours.

All businesses can trade online and deliver their goods.

The closure order includes construction sites apart from those relating to public utilities.

The Easter bonfire tradition was also banned, and any ‘fuel’ collected by youths will be removed by local authorities and the police.

Violators will be fined €150.

Tonight is a good night
Tonight our wonderful Cyprus president locked down
Because foolishly and selfishly people where still going to beaches, parks etc
Tonight our uk government also locked down for the same reasons

But already on other forums ...the British are off

Well I will be okay to go for a run and walk on a beach! .....NO!

I can still go for a walk.....NO!

I AM going for a run and or a walk!...get lost!

They won,t fine me for being on a beach!

And this is in Cyprus

What is wrong with these British people

Which part of the two commands do they not understand?

Stay at home except for food and medicines and drs

And wash your hands thoroughly like drs do when you get home!

For the next 3 weeks that is all that we are being asked to do

It is 3 weeks not an eternity
And not even like the 72 weeks that Ann Frank and her family hid away without complaint in a small attic to save their lives!

I am absolutely ashamed to be British!
I hate the British shameful, selfish, stubborn, I will do it my way mentality

For gods sake our government here in Cyprus does not want a repeat of Italy...where you choose one life over another because our health service is completely over run

In the uk..our government has now locked down all vulnerable for the next 12 weeks...because he also does not want a repeat of Italy

And yet some of the foolish, thick, stubborn British will still not listen

And I am ashamed of them!

Our Cypriot friends here...cannot understand the British, selfish, shameful attitude to ...I WILL do it my way...at the detriment of loved ones and everyone’s life!

Shame on every single one of these stupid, selfish individuals!

However, you CAN go for a walk or a jog as long as it is in your neighborhood. No more than two persons. You can walk your dog. You can go to the supermarket, florist, bakery, petrol station, car salesroom etc-No more than TWO people.

Well done the president and well done BJ. Sadly needed. Just wish the UK would also cancel all flights apart from Cargo planes.

Maybe we should consider 'policing' the lock down as per Cape Town :crylaughin
