Has any one any idea what the procedure is when you bring a car from the UK and you are NOT a resident -- can it stay on UK plates or have you to do what those who intend living here have to do and register with customs . A friend of mine is considering bringing her car to leave when she come for her hols. Marj

Not sure of the financial implications, but the 'bureaucratic' implications with anything to do with car importing are horrible IMHO

My brother in law brought their car when the came to live here after nearly a year of going to customs to get extensions they had no problem when it came to the duty and getting CY plates. As I say my Q is NOT living here and bringing a car do the same rules apply. Marj

Not sure of the answer to your question but we have just had a quotation from a man who deals with importing cars to Cyprus. We wanted to send a 2000cc car which we have owned for over a year and we will not be resident in Cyprus.

The quotation came back at £500 for the shipping but around £2,000 for the Cyprus plates and import tax etc. We decided that it was not worth it unless the car is something very special to you since if you add on the insurance for the car and maintenance for even one year then the price is silly.

Foegot to say - we bought a 'duty paid' car from Andreas Georgiou in Jan 2000 and it just stays at our house in Tala when we're not there.

No bureaucracy involved, apart from MOT and road tax.

We shipped a car out here five years ago, long before we came to live.

As there is obviously no Duty Free entitlement, we had to pay the duty and of course the transfer on to Cyprus plates.

Your friend won't be able to leave it on UK plates indefinitely as the insurance company will insist in the end that it is transferred. They do give a reasonable period of time to sort it out though.

Even with the duty and shipping costs, it worked out to be cheaper than hiring a car for two weeks two or three times a year.

Do what?

We bought it from a dealer. We probably had to show our dog license and granny's birth certificate (as you do in Cyprus) but apart from that all they wanted was our money ;-)
When it needed an MOT, we took it to the MOT testing station.
When it needs taxing, we tax it (on line)

Simple as that.

To be honest, Frank, I can't remember. But it was 2000, so maybe I forget!

Shall I say that I don't remember it being a hassle, well, not as much as when we had a 'duty free' one!

Marj,

Do you have any idea how much it has cost for your friend to send their car on the roro from Southampton, and will she have to pay import duty when she collects it tomorrow? Just looking in to different options available for when the time comes.

Thanks,
Sue.
