Post subject:  Change of ownership (private car)

I look after a vehicle for a friend who has a holiday home here.
He is coming out in January for a month then again in August.
Between Jan and August I have agreed to sell the vehicle for him and buy him another better
one.
What is the procedure I have to follow, as he won't be here?
Is it the same procedure if the vehicle is being taken in part-exchange by a motor trader?
Thank you,
Geoff.

Yes Geoff
Its the usual procedure as if you were selling or buying.

It is difficult to sell someone else's car, as the buyer and seller have to be present to sign at the Road Transport Dept or Citizen's Service Centre. It is possible to get the seller to sign the form if it is posted to him/her, but it needs certifying by the Cyprus High Commission in London.

I got this direct from the Citizen's Service Centre when I was in a similar position a few months ago. However, I guess if you are selling to a dealer, they may have a way around things.

Hi, hope some forum member can help me.
I look after my friends car, they have a holiday home for 2 x 2 months visit per year average.
The car is fully taxed, insured (for both of us), MOT.
I have the registration document.
He has now sold his house and has bought another.
Is it possible for me (in his absence) to have his registration document changed accordingly?
Any form to complete for that?
Thanks,
Geoff.

I currently look after a vehicle for a friend who has a holiday home here. I am a named driver
on his Insurance Policy.
I am now buying the vehicle from him and we are aware of the procedures (Form TOM9 etc).
Will the existing insurance policy be OK to get the transfer of ownership?
Geoff.

I was going to suggest that Geoff bought the car from his friend and then went on to sell it as the new legal owner.

Or simply get a POA from him when he comes over to sell it. then you present yourself as him/her.

Or as stated transfer to yourself first, however you will then be responsible to MOT, Tax, Insure etc.

... and then Geoff is going to buy his friend "a new better" car.

This suggests Geoff will be test driving the new car, Geoff will decide how much the new car is worth, Geoff will decide what to pay ... what happens if a major problem surfaces 3-6 months after Geoff buys the car which costs a fortune to put right? Geoff's friend might not be too happy.

Geoffs hole. Geoffs problem, then he can open a thread on car problems in the motoring section.

This is probably the best way then, many thanks.
This saga has been going on for 2 years now, delayed due to family illness (owner's daughter).
Hopefully we will be getting it resolved early next year.
Geoff.
