You have 2 large empty containers. One has a capacity of 5 gallons and one has a capacity of 3 gallons. You also have a supply of running water. How do you end up with one container holding 4 gallons of water, using only the two containers you have?

When you have solved this, question 2 is "What film did this appear in?"

Fill the 3g container & then pour it into the 5g container, then fill the 3g container a 3rd & add to 5g container, which will give you 4g in the 5g container :!:

Can't rememebr the film tho :(

How do you know exactly what a third is then Pete - it would only be a guess. Try again. It has to be exact.

Fill the 3g container & then pour it into the 5g container, refill the 3g container & then fill the 5g container until full, which will leave you with just 1g in the 3g container remaining, mark the container, then empty both containers :!:
Fill up the 3g again & pour into the 5g container, then fill up the 3g container to the 1g mark & pour that into the 5g container, now you have 4g exactly :D

Still don't know the film

No Pete - no marker!!!!! Maybe the military would supply you with one.

Not a marker as in a pen, you don't get them in the military either, use a stone or something to mark the container :D

No - you can only use the containers, (and of course the water) - nothing else at all. The measurement has to be exact.

 Fill the 3 gallon jug. Pour it into the 5 gallon jug. Now the 5 gallon jug has 3 gallons of water, 2 gallons available.

Fill the 3 gallon jug. Pour the water from the 3 gallon into the 5 gallon until it's full. You now have a full 5 gallon jug and a 3 gallon jug with 1 gallon.

Empty the 5 gallon jug. Pour the 1 gallon from the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug.

Fill up the 3 gallon jug, pour it into the 5 gallon jug. You now have 4 gallons :D

The film you are talking about is DIE HARD 3 with Bruce Willis & Samual L Jackson who had to de-activate a bomb by the fountain :!:

Or you can do it this way too:

Fill the 5 gallon jug from the tap, then fill the 3 gallon jug with the water from the 5 gallon jug. This'll leave you with exactly 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

Pour away the water in the 3 gallon jug and empty the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug. This'll leave you with exactly 2 gallons in the 3 gallon jug.

Fill the 5 gallon jug from the tap, then top up the 3 gallon jug from the 5 gallon jug. This'll leave you with a full 3 gallon jug and a 5 gallon jug with exactly 4 gallons in it
