Do you think religion/religious rulers would have handled the economy in general and the townturn in particular different to the existing bunch of University trained muppets?

Would we be trading in a slower more sedate fashion, would population explosions have been less and more sustainable?
I read with some interest this article on the conservative (not in Tory terms) nature of religious prudence.
