Well since i first found out I was being made redundant back in October, I have been waiting to leave, the time has dragged, and it has been so difficult to have any motivation at work. My Team were all in the same boat, and we had days when we laughed and days when we cried, but once we knew we were going we were hoping to be allowed to go early and gracefully.
Our final final day would have been friday 13th March, so in the end, yesterday our last day was just 2.5 weeks early.

Today I have felt really sad, after 14.5 years, I am institutionalised and I guess it is a kind of grieving. Also a scary place out there at the moment, most of the jobs I have applied for have been withdrawn in the current downturn.
I worked for Royal & Sun Alliance who today announced a further 1200 job cuts, so It is highly possible that the "More Than". Centre where i worked will close.
I used to have a fabulous view of the River Mersey and the Liver Buildings from my desk I will try to post it

Never mind I have a week in Cyprus to look forward to soon. I will be posting about that coffee meet in the Prince in the next week or so as I am over 18th March.

Aw Mandy I feel so sorry for you. The only time I was made redundant was back in 1967 when I was 18. I worked at Wolsey the hosiery people in the offices and I was gutted but at that time jobs were plentiful and I soon got another one but now is a different thing all together. I think my neice is going to be made redundant as she works for First Choice, now owned by Thompsons, and they have just announced they are closing the Salford office where she works.

Just try and keep your chin up and I am sure something will turn up. As you say you have your holiday to look forward to, pity we will miss one another as you are coming back on the plane we arrive on.

Changing the subject completely is your daughter going to the auditions for X-factor this year? I saw the advert the other day and thought of her then.

Mandy, its happened to everyone at one time or another (yes, even the world famous Tanny). Redundancy when the shipping industry collapsed in the 80's, I have worked self employed since then and had a few creditors go down the swanneee owing me bundles of money.

But the important thing is to stand tall, dust yourself down, establish what you are good at, your strong points, your star roles, your assets to a business and decide what you really want to be doing.

Why not give it a go yourself, try self employment, even if only as a stopgap until things pick up again on the employee type basis.

Market your personality, sparkling appearance, steadfast service, mindblowing committment and general ability.

If someone says'Can you paint number 7 busses?' say 'Yes of course I can'

Just go for it (but dont wear Nikes to the interview).

Mandy

I understand where you are coming from, although my situation was slightly different - I took voluntary redundancy in 2003 from a company where I had worked since 1966 - a total of thirty six and a half years. Even though I was glad to leave (long story), I was in that scary place you are now in. I was a single person, still with a mortgage to pay (alleviated by the not large redundancy payment), and in a very scary place. The people I worked with were like family, I had known them that long, and yes, it is a form of grieving you are going through.

BUT you do come out of it - it is a different place in the UK at the moment than in 2003, but I know you have been taking this web design course, so as Tanny says, market yourself and your skills, old and new.

Let me know when the coffee meet is, and I wil certainly try to make it - if it's Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, I am available after 12.30, so I hope to see you then.

Chin up girl, you can do it.

Wish you luck Mandy in whatever you decide to do, plus your daughter.

Some magic will come up soon.

Hi Mandy,

Sorry to hear the news of your redundancy but have a little break and take stock of your life and then go in the direction that you feel led to.

If you want another coffee and a chat over here in Southport again then just let me know and we can have a chat and you can let off steam. Sometimes to do that with a non family member helps since you can say things as they are without worrying about hurting anyone.

We are supposed to be away soon in Jeddah but good luck.

Know exactly how you feel Mandy, in 67 whilst serving in Cyprus our regiment was given the the news that it was to disband on 31st March 69, I took rendundancy out of the army of all places under the phrase "Due to the reduction in the establishment of his corps".

Mandy,my heart goes out to you, it really does. You are a reason we want to leave England,if you know what I mean.
Who's next ?
Well fortunately not me or Mrs DP but it could well be my daughter or son. I worry about it all the time.
Good Luck Mandy hope everything works out for you and yours.
Gary

If fear of redundancy is reason enough for leaving Britain I can't see the allure of Cyprus of all places :smilielol

Hi,

I was made redundant in July and the plan was to sell the house and move to Cyprus.
Unfortunately the credit crunch exploded at about the same time and we cannot sell the house!

I was stuck for 3 months after being given notice before I was free to do anything positive.

No, but my apparent bluntness and fondness for the truth sometimes upsets other posters, shame your disingenuity doesn't have the same effect on others as it does on me. :smilielol

Hows the "I am retiring, no I am not, I don't need the money but...I am not retiring to Cyprus, I am scared of redundancy so I am leaving Britain for Cyprus no I am not, I am some day soon maybe never" retirement plans going? :smilielol

I don't want to spoil this thread by playing your silly games. Remember this is a thread about someone being unfortunate and being made redundant. I would not wish that on anyone and that is genuine, believe me.
Don't bother replying and trying to get a bite, you won't succeed.
Why don't you pm me if you want to play games.
Gary
