No real surprise to most, but will be nice to have something in black and white, as it were! :clapping

Scientists seek to discover how Geordies survive the cold in next to nothing

Scientists are hoping to finally solve a mystery which has long baffled southerners - how Geordies survive the cold wearing next to nothing.

Novacastrians are famed for their ability to venture out in the bitter North East winters without wearing a coat.

Now researchers from Newcastle's Centre for Life want to find out if their hardiness is anything more than a myth.

One theory being explored is that Geordies have thicker skins than people in other parts of the country.

Linda Conlon, chief executive of the Centre for Life said: "We decided to investigate the reputation Geordies have for not wearing a coat in even the worst weather.

"Is there a possible genetic reason for our bravery or is it simply because we like to show off our finery on a night out?"

An online questionnaire will ask Geordies about their coat wearing behaviour to find out whether they are naturally warmer than their Southern counterparts, or if having no need for a coat is part of Newcastle's cultural heritage.

In addition to the survey, scientists will take to the city's night spots to carry out fieldwork and interview revellers.

It is the first time the myth has been explored and the results will be announced during the ScienceFest which will run between March 6 and 15.

Nothing better to do then ??

Everyone knows that it is to do with the mallfunction of the Geordie brain..
Its because they are so slow , they are back indoors
before the message has reached the brain that they are actully cold ...
 :smilielol

I think I could save them a lot of money on figuring this one out.
A couple of possibilities

a) Stupidity
b) they all have beer coats on

The Geordie in my house obviously isn't a Geordie cos she's done nothing but complain about how cold it is lately.

The simple fact is if it comes to a choice between spending their money on a coat or fags n broon ale, the latter will always win.

I'm sensing a lot of bitterness in this thread!

I guess it's true that there are only 2 kinds of people in this world:

1. Geordies
2. Those that wish they were Geordies.

:D

When I responded to this thread I accepted some people would seek to negatively view us Geordies, but we are used to it. Jealousy is natural given our superiority and the beautiful area of England we live in. The Geordie Nation can take it cos we are all really nice people who have to put up with other types of people. Live and let live I say!

I agree with the two types quoted by captain Fantastic though!!!!

PS Captain how you doing Mate - I am back in Tynemouth and missing your friendly banter (friend of Jo and Helen) in the George and Dragon. See you after 18th April.

Hi.

I watched a programme on the History Channel last week. The History of Newcastle, we brought so many things into this world, apart from me and some other members there was the Steam train, light bulb, ships, tanks.....more and more I can't remember now but I was proud and always will be proud of my home town (Gateshead actually.)
Even Earl Grey Tea was named after Lord Earl who built a lot of beautiful buildings in Newcastle. So when you are sipping your 'posh' tea think of Geordies.

Just to prove the point about the supremacy of the Geordie Nation - I am sitting in my flat in Tynemouth lookling out over King Edwards Bay. I kid you not there are currently 4 Surfers in the water, two fishermen and one guy who must be 70+ running up and down the beach clad only is his swimming trunks (and I really mean swimming trunks!). He will do 6 circuits of the beach and then he will go in for a swim. He does it every day!!! Oh and it is what you might call a "brisk" day today.

Off to get my "cozy" on and going down to join him!!!

PS on second thoughts having opened the window I'm off to the "Stuffed Dog" instead!

Yeah, I had sussed that was you mate - I'm not too bad, not the same in the George since you left, no-one else appreciates my vast array of toon trivia knowledge! :D

This thread is brilliant by the way - Neil in particular is positively seething with the Geordie wannabee vibe!

It does, you just need to edit the Youtube URL slightly, using this format:

[ flash=400,320]http://www.youtube.com/v/sBIaOsPxpTA[/flash]

Take out the space at the beginning and it will work. The 400 and 320 dictate the display size and can be edited to suit as well.

See, that's actual Geordie supremacy in action right there! 8-)

Missing you too Mate (we are just friends for anyone else reading so no funny comments!) and worrying thing have started to show your own traits back here in Tynemouth. Problem is the lads just give me strange looks and put it down to age - what's your excuse?

Neil a Geordie Wanabee - no surprise there - everyone wants to be a Geordie but few qualify!

For your information - 4th July Tino Asprilla is having a testimonial game in Medellin (Columbia to those geographically challenged) and he is here in the Toon handing out invites to the Entertainers Beardsley, Shearer, Ferdinand and Keegan to to play - Mike Ashley not invited!. Also playing will be Maradona, Zola, Cannarvaro, Buffon, Valderama, Crespo, Veron and Rene Heguita (the goalie who kicked the ball off his line with a back flip!).

More interesting for you is that the game is to be televised live so watch out for it.

That should be cracking! Also been reading they're planning on restaging the epic 4-3 Liverpool game:

http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2009/02/12/premier-league-s-greatest-ever-match-to-be-restaged-72703-22913311/

Bet we beat them this time!

To be a true Geordie you have to be born a mile(?) either side of the River Tyne so I believe?

From the age of six weeks and every year of my childhood I spent many a school holiday in Newbiggin where members of my family were miners in Ashington colliery.
I remember we use to go down to the shore line and pick up the sea coal, even though all the miners received free coal the shore line would be packed with people doing the same, use to take us hours though because everyone knew each other and stopped to chat or just pass the time of day.
I've always found the people of the North East to be the friendliest with a great sense of humour just like us Liverpudlians.

Ashington born and bred but my Father and his family hail from Newbiggin by the sea,and I am too young to roll my RRR's, I think that starts happening when you hit your 70/80's

There isn't much sea coal left these days and not many open fires to burn it on anyway but I remember those days...Memories, like the corners of my mind... :)

Ah Newbiggin-by-the-sea - I remenber it well. The only holiday I had as a child was in using my Uncles/Aunts Caravan at Newbiggin. had some great times there, plenty for a youngster to do and from my perspective a great place to spend the Summer. Nearly drowned once too!! How the World would have been different witrhout me!

Currently tracing my family tree and my Mother was born into a Pit Family at West Sleekburn near Bedlington.

Easy boy easy don't get carried away

I remember the caravans well we use to go up there and play with the kids who were on holiday, do you remember the little church around the bay? the caravan park use to be just a little bit further on, it was such a safe place for kids in those days.

It was a nice place to be Marj and I have many happy memories.

Pity the Toon haven't got some of his supremacy!

The caravan site and the church are still there at the church point.Nothing much has changed except for the sculpture in the sea, new sea defence wall and some imported sand.
