I just brought my wife a new lap top , could she use our wireless internet to get on the internet from her shop from our house,which is about 500 yrds away ??? sorry not that clued up on these sort of things.Or would she have to get her own broadband in the shop. I have to be good from now on, now she a member on pp, she can keep an eye on me Why oh why did i suggest this

If you connect her laptop to your internet she could providing the distance is not too great.

Very unlikely that you will get a signal at 500yds distance.

About 100m is the maximum legal range for a wifi signal. You can extend this by using a high gain external antenna, but this is not legal for use in the EU - you could get 500m or so then.

Check the side of the box of the router for the distance covered, or simply take the laptop to the shop, do a search for wireless networks in range, try it in different parts of the shop.

But its unlikely that a god consistent signal will occur over 500m

I can say this advice is accurate, we have a second computer upstairs and the signal can be poor at times.

Concrete houses are reinforced with steel bars which makes them behave like a Faraday cage. It is frequently difficult to obtain a usable radio signal between floors of such a house. Here I have a wireless repeater connected by CAT5 cable to the modem/router (upstairs) to get a wireless signal on the ground floor. There is very little signal outside the house. There are even a few blank areas in the house where I cannot get a signal on my mobile phone and my wireless TV distribution system is a constant source of annoyance (though it is more reliable than the wired system it replaced).

Sandy and I have a laptop when we are in Peyia, We have spent 200+euros to boost the signal from our friends apartment to ours, and on a good day we might get a signal strength of 1 to 2 bars. His building is about 100 feet away, he puts his transmitter outside of the window, and I hang my receiver on the outside of the flyscreen...it's like being tied to a leash to make it work...gets so frustrating that I'm ready to pay for 12 months service, even though we are only on the Island 15-16 weeks a year.

Why pay for 12 months service, when our system is pay as you use - €11 per week for up to 2M/300k

Thanks everyone for the info We took wife's new lap top down to the shop today, and it never pick up ours, but it did pick up sky network don't ask me how i done it Anyway we went to p.c world today to ask them advice, they said we could buy a contract with a mobile phone company for £20 per month, and we will always have a internet no matter where we are. Is this true? and is it worth it, if she can get sky down at the shop for nothing.Please do not ask me how we got it as i really do not know, it just said sky, so click on it and we got internet . I am really not up on the pc things, and a bit ok ok not a bit very thick when it come to this.Come to think of it, it not just a pc it the whole life i am thick on But am i bothered no, i am me

It will be someone elses router sending a signal, and it will be fine until it is security enabled and you cant get on, also for sending personal details (bank etc) it may be monitorable from fraudsters, so best not to.

The wirelsee dongles are quite good in certain areas of UK, Useless semirural in Scotland due to poor mobile coverage.

If theres a phone line in the shop, just upgrade it to asdl and have tinternet installed by a number of suppliers.

Go onto moneysupermarket.com for comparisons of providers in your area and prices.

She has 2 phone lines at her shop, so might be worth looking into it, and getting broadband< I think> told you i am thick She taking orders by phone and Fax on 1 line and the other is for debit and credit card payments, it about time she went internet and get web page up and running, so we can get more money for her shop when she sell up in 7 mths time

We wold like to have access to the internet via our laptop but do not want to connect to a landline in our apartment. Does this make sense.

At my office at work, because I am on a site away from the main site, I have a 3G card that I put into my laptop and hey presto I log on to the internet.

Is it possible to do the same in Cyprus. Do they have the same type of card like a pay-as-you-go one.

Have no problems finding my way around a computer and internet but not to good with the techno stuff.
