Why is it that most British Ex-pats live in and around Pafos, but the British High Commission is in Nicosia?

Because my doughnut of a step-daughter has lost her passport and couldn't fly home last night, so we have to go to the BHC to arrange an emergency one!!

Maybe they just get more and better freebies there.

Or maybe that Nic is the cultural, economic and governmental capital.

Plus its probably as far away as the UK Govt can get from its own citizens.

I would just have thought that a caring govt. would have provided an office with an appropriate level of capability close to a major centre of residence of Her Majesty's subjects............... ................or is that too logical?

Well, been to BHC today and was immediately disappointed by the place - it felt like a 1970's social security office - grubby, only one person behind the counter and glass screens you could barely hear a word through.

The step-daughter had to provide 2 passport photos countersigned by someone of substance who has known her for at least two years..............but she is a tourist and apart from myself as an ex-JP knows nobody who meets the criteria as a countersignatory, and I am disqualified because I am part of her family....................anyway, I signed it and we'll see what happens next.

Then when she went to pay by card (remember she is at the end of her holiday, supposed to have flown home satuday, so has little cash left), was told she could only pay by cash!! Fortunately I had 200 euro on me as it cost 158 euro...........but what would they have done if she had been on her own?

Now she has a 3 to 4 day wait to see IF she can get a passport because they couldn't find her on their system, despite the fact that she flew into Cyprus on 18th July and could only have done so with a passport!!

Beggars belief!!

Chris

I think this has something to do with the BHC being in Nicosia long before ex-pats started moving to Cyprus & Paphos specifically, plus its the capital of the country & that's where most BHC are based in other countries

I accept that totally Pete..............but with a degree of lateral thinking, the BHC could open a small office a few days a week here, to deal with passport issues and tourist problems? or is that too logical and practical?

chris

3 words mate: This is Cyprus

They're not pratical & don't use logic over here mate & don't even get me started on consideration

To be honest mate, I don't think they've ever thought about it & if no one ask, they probably never will

Ok..dont take this the wrong way..

But how far is your nearest passport office in the UK?

When I lived in Poole, the easiest to get to was Newport some 3+ hours away..failing that London 2+ hours but fighting with M3 & M4.

How long does it take to travel from Paphos to Nicosia?

...........you also had a better postal service.

How many tourists stay in and around Nicosia?

How many ex-pats are fighting fit and healthy and quite happy to undertake 300km round trips as easy as nipping into Pafos?

Its a small country, the logisitics are well within the capabilities of the BHC...............and comparing it to the UK is a chalk and cheese situation, sorry.

Its probably irrelevant now exactly whee the BHC is because the UK passprot service have just lost 3000 blank ones destined for distribution by the RAF to BHC's throughout the world.......
