OFFICIAL: Cyprus talks to start in September

NICOSIA 25.JUL.08
Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders have agreed to start the comprehensive talks on September 3 to end the 34-year division of the island.

Turkish and Greek Cypriots will hold separate referandums on the final settlement, the leaders said in a statement after the meeting.

The leaders met at the UN-controlled Nicosia airport in the buffer zone.

"The leaders decided to start full-fledged negotiations on September 3," said Taye-Brook Zerihoun, head of the United Nations mission on the partitioned island, adding that a final settlement would be put to separate referendums in both communities.

This certainly warrants discussion - how does everyone see it going this time?

Seems to be more of a conciliatory mood this time, or is that all just for show??

Here's the Beeb's take on it:

Quote:
Cyprus sets date for peace talks

The leaders of the divided island of Cyprus have agreed to launch reunification talks on 3 September, the United Nations has said.

The agreement came after discussions between the leaders of the rival Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.

Talks have been stalled since 2004 when Greek Cypriots rejected a UN peace plan which was backed by Turkish Cypriots.

The island has been divided for 34 years into a breakaway Turkish Cypriot north and the Greek Cypriot south.

The announcement came after Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat met for two hours in the UN-controlled buffer zone which divides the island.

I think it will resolved this time , one way or another..
it will end up with a vote for re-unification or permanant partition (2 states)
that way they will have no get out

I think it will be resolved also, as I read the other day that the EU has told Turkey to remove its 20,000 troops from Famagusta due to them tresspassing on EU land, as it belongs to Cyprus
