I have now got my new laptop up and running, but I think I may have a problem. The power cable for charging the battery up, has a box in the middle of it, where a cable goes into the computer, and another from the other into the socket. Well, this box gets really, really hot when it's plugged into the socket - is this right? I daren't let it rest on furniture, cos it would burn it. I have a surge protector plugged into it, so it's cable from computer into box, into surge protector, into cable, into socket in wall. Just thought it was worth checking up.

Hi Jean
I have a laptop too, and the plug in question is very hot on mine too and I agree you could not put this on furniture, I have never thought there was a problem, and that all laptops were the same.

hi jean,
our cable on the laptop is the same it sits on the carpet and has never caused a problem, our laptop often gets warm also although the fan usually kicks in on it, the laptop sits on our couch most of the time....and has never marked it, however now i have put on my sensible head maybe this should stop as could be a fire hazard!!! :oops:

Thanks guys - I've never had a laptop before, so thought I'd better ask. I don't leave it plugged in when I'm not there anyway, but it really does get hot.

Set my mind at rest anyway.

Jean

We had to put ours in for a clean during our last visit, the innards were all clogged up with dust and muck (drawn in by the static). They recommended a heat pad. This is a sort of tray that you sit the laptop on and has fans in it - costs around 15 to 20 euros. It runs from a USB connection and will help prevent the laptop from overheating. The box you mention is a voltage regulator or some some article - called an 'AC adaptor', and they always get hot, even in the UK winters.

Hope you're enjoying the new laptop.

cheers :wink: :wink:

Hi Jean;
The power supply (the black box) will run hot.

Check the label on the black box; there should be dozens of logo's; these are various country safety marks. One thing these agencies do is check the material used to ensure nothing is flamable in the part containing their mark; so the box might get hot but it won't burst into flames.

If the box is so hot you can't touch it; it probably has a fault; call your supplier for a replacement.

Hope this helps.

Steve
