Well Mal let's hope they are considerate and on the day they nuke Tel Aviv the wind is blowing in the right direction for Cyprus ie westerlies.
There again, that's highly unlikely, cos then it would blow the fall out towards Iran so take shelter !

That's the reason for all the "wests" concern.

Been a problem since they "religously" overthrow the 'Shaa' of Iran.(Persia)
That must be over 30 years ago now since "Ayatolla Homanei" (spelling?) came to power.

Do you remember them taking all the american hostages for over a year?
The planned helicopter rescue failed due to some getting lost and mechanical failure during a sand storm.

I actually "staged" (Refuel stop) through Iran when it was friendly with the west, on my RAF posting to RAAF Butterworth Malaysia via Singapore in 1966 ( ah!! whispering giant "Bristol Brittania")

Given the volatile nature of the people who inhabit the middle east, should we be worried do you think?

Was trying to put another "what if" story but it won't download.

So..............Iran develops a nuclear capability deliverable within 2000km..............and it develops the will to use it (already in embryonic form with statements like "wipe Israel off the face of the earth" or something similar), so who does it target?

Well Israeli military capability to start with, and Tel Aviv, thus ensuring an inability to retaliate, but there's also the problem of the Israeli Allies i.e. US - so their Middle East bases need to be hit as well, and because the British Govt. will be obliged to "assist" the yanks (because we all know who really pulls the strings in our "special relationship" don't we  ), the British military capability in the Middle East would also be targeted..............oops, there go the SBA's :pow

Dig your survival bunkers and stock up your medical supplies, water and canned food people.............its gonna get unpleasant around here :manic

Chris, stop trying to scare people, by the time the Iranians lauch a ICBM witha nuke attached, there would be a 100 anti-ICBM missiles heading in its direction to shoot it down before it leaves Iranian airspace

In any case, if nuclear war does start, you'd never have enough clean water, clean air, canned food & medical supplies to last a 1000 yrs, so why bother attempting to save yourself  the only way to survive a nuclear war is to in a high position with-in the government or royalty, as the rest of us are expendable

For a start Iran doesn't have any intercontinental ballistic missiles. What it does appear to have is a variety of missiles of the point and shoot variety, the biggest of which are capable of travelling a couple of thousand kilometers and which could carry a nuclear warhead. Current thinking is that they don't actually have such a warhead, and if they did, would the detection system be discerning enough to know which missile was carrying the warhead?

Israel has, I believe, a generous stock of American Patriot missiles which are supposed to shoot down such missiles, but which didn't seem capable of stopping all of Saddam's Scud missiles - so I hope that your view of the current missile defence arrangement is accurate. No technology is foolproof.

In any case, it is the warhead flying the other way FROM Israel, who we know does have nuclear capability and which has the means to deliver it accurately, we should be worried about. Is America going to retaliate against Israel if it makes a pre-emptive strike against Iran (something it has threatened to do itself). Would the Russians care enough to bother?

The bigger response would be from the 2 billion-ish muslims, in every corner of the world, who might be sufficiently p*ssed off on behalf of their brothers in Iran to make the current terrorist threat seem like children's playtime.

It is not the Iranians that frighten me, but the Americans and their self obsessed foreign policies which support Israel's excesses!

Your doomsday scenario may well have some merit, were an attack on (say) Tel Aviv to be made and the world's superpowers thought it a good plan to retaliate on behalf of Israel by blowing one another off the planet, but it has been widely mooted that a limited nuclear strike may not only be possible, but may in some circumstances be a good idea, which is why so many tactical weapons have been created. Such an individual attack would make a great mess, and quite a lot of people downwind may suffer serious health issues, but it wouldn't directly be an end to life as we know it.

There was, as you will remember, a very messy Nuclear accident at Chernobyl some years back. This affected a large swathe of the country and its effects were felt as far away as the UK (ie the fallout had circumnavigated the earth). It killed a few people and made a lot more sick, but life in Russia (and Britain) goes on.

But as you say, in the great political game, we are all expendable :(

This some of the most optimistic talk to come out of the region for quite some time - perhaps common sense may prevail for a while at least:

Quote:
Israel PM: Peace closer than ever

The Israeli and Palestinian leaders have expressed their optimism over the chances for peace at a summit of EU and Mediterranean rim nations in Paris.

Israeli PM Ehud Olmert said his country had never been so close to reaching an agreement with the Palestinians as now.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said both were serious and wanted peace.

Certainly seems to be an uncharacteristically co-operative mood in the region at the moment - here's one headline I never thought we would see:

Quote:
Iran satisfied at US involvement

Iran has welcomed as positive America's decision to take part in international talks on its nuclear programme.

Speaking in Damascus, Iran's foreign minister said Tehran was looking forward to constructive engagement.

A meeting in Switzerland will involve, for the first time, the US Under Secretary of State, William Burns.

The talks will aim to find out how Iran will respond to the West's offer of economic incentives if Tehran suspends its uranium enrichment programme.

"The American participation is positive," Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said, after meeting Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus.

Well I can't help but feel Israel and Iran are trying to get brownie points before the doo doo hits the fan.
