You know we are planning to come out to Cyprus to rent for 6 months late next year or early 2010, well I can't get my head round what to do about a car.
Knowing that we were coming I've kept the same car for 4 yrs now and it's not worth a lot so not worth bringing over.
Do you think we should buy a new car or a newish car over there and if we decide not to stay then sell it in Cyprus or ship/drive it back here?.
Do you think we should buy a cheap car and leave it there if we return?
Do you think we should try and sort out a long term hire deal ?
Advice would be appreciated, were you in this position and what did you do ?
Thanks Gary

Lots has been said on this one Gary, but sadly no definitive answer exists.

Financially different people come from different places and the cost of ditching and buying is not important, and others it is an important aspect.

The customs and excise in Nicosia emailed me to tell me that if the car was my personal property and the VAT and relevant taxes paid in the uK then it would have no Import or VAT imposed on it. Other people have had differing experiences.

The method of transportation can vary in cost and needs to be explored carefully. We are planning to bring our trusty steed over for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it has high mileage so almost worthless here. If I fill it to the brim then I will save on shipping costs of luggage etc. If I get 6-8 months work out of the car in Cyp, then its taken a particular worry off my shoulders.

But everybody is different, I hope you get the answer you need and that suits.

PS, its not a burger van is it?

When we were thinking of shipping a car over from the UK we were told to remove all valuables from it before shipping.
In the end we bought a brand new Honda Jazz for a lot less than the UK price.

Hi Gary,

We shipped our Honda Civic over with the furniture and so far don't regret it. We did fill the car up and were told that was fine as long as the contents were listed in the inventory - seems the rules about this vary from one shipper to another. You can (I have been told) use a "roll-on-roll-off" shipment and that costs about £500. I don't know if you are planning on sending a container so you need to weigh everything up. If we have NOT been sending a container we would not have brought the car I am sure. Also it was 4 years old with very low mileage, the duty was minimal (€280) and it is generally in very good condition. You need to look at all the options and consider your own personal circumstances. All options have their merits.

Hi Disco

On Roll on Roll Off Ferry you can not put any personal effects in the car

if you use a container you can
