You'd have thought with a dodgy freezer, a leaking air-con, the rate of growth of the passion fruit vine and biking around a Cyprus dam that things couldn't get anymore hardcore rock n roll in the BigDutch household ...... well you'd be wrong, massively. Unbeknown to me the local arthropod hoodlums decided to stage an all night pool party at mine ! Check out the smile on this bad boy found floating deep in the pool, a quick rub down in the sun and he/she was ready for the photoshoot.

Not the first one i've seen but i would like help identifying further than Centipede if anyone would be able to assist in this most serious of matters !

I beleive these things can give a nasty bite Geoff but not poisonous and if bitten should see a Doctor.
What size is the one you have, is it alive or dead? I see he has 40 legs so he is a centipede and not a millipede...but I could be wrong.
They are found pretty much all over the Island and often end up in swimming pools, I remember some one finding a few in our communal pool.
Apart from that I don't know any more but he is a pretty boy.

Have you found any more spiders lately? I am waiting for you to come back with another one

Jan :)

Geoff apparently (after a trawl of the internet) if one of these is found int your pool it means that it was acting alone and therefore probably just a recce for the whole clan. The popular place for the others to wait is in the warm dry places of the bedroom, such as under your pillows and in the matress.

If you dont read this until the morning, and werenot bitten, then they must be hiding elsewhere!!!! :)

If you dont get up and cannot therefore read this, then they must be poisonous, and thank you for the warning....

I found one in the bathroom at the weekend - this time it was dead, possibly one of the cats had got at it though it didn't look harmed. I've had a couple of live one in the house over the last few years, always in the bedroom with one hidden in clothes the laundry basket which gave me a fright when i was going through it! They wiggle in a funny way when they scurry away from me - but i wasn't aware they could bite!

Is there any proof these millipedes/centipedes are poisonous :? :?

I've seen dozens of them around but never bothered with them as they just scuttle off

The thing is Tanny mate, there are centipede's in other countries that are deadly, so I wouldnt joke about it too much as you may have to visit one & you'll not know until it bites you

A little bit of useless info for you tho, nearly every species of amphibian/insect has a dangerious relative, so be careful what you touch or go near

ok peeps ... Centipede was as far as i got but appararntly there are thousands of known varieties and having counted the segments the current focus is on Scolopendromorpha.

It maybe amusing but i don't know if this is harmful or not, my mother-in-law (born in the village) says they bite but presumably not just for the hell of it!? Anyway looks like we are no nearer to knowing what exactly it is and whether its one to stamp on or just let run away. !

I never stamp on anything over here as you don't know if they carry their young on their backs like cockroaches, that way you'll spread their young everywhere

I just spray them with 'Izikill' (green tin) instant death no matter what it is
