Paphos restaurant and bar owners want to meet with the deputy tourism minister to discuss the decreased number of visitors to their establishments in June and July, the head of their group Aggelos Onisiforou said on Wednesday.

Onisiforou said that the minister Costas Koumis might think that there are high levels of tourism in Cyprus this year compared to last, but that is not the message the group has received from restaurant and bar owners.

He added that during the months of June and July the turnover in Paphos presented serious problems.

Onisiforou said that in August the traffic has been good, but the problem created by the previous months strongly worries the industry to a large extent.

He added that the upward trend of tourism in Cyprus is said to only concern hotels and not restaurants and bars.

Its all well and good the CTO or what ever they call themselves now reporting increased tourism as it is only an increase based on a major covid decline and also it does the local bussinesses no good atall when people come all inclusive and spendvthe whole holiday on site and spend no money in Cyprus as it was all paid up front at home . It is just burocrats massaging bad figures to look good . Dont forget the impact home delivery/ wolt has had on the restaurant trade too.

It may be worrisome as many outlets now rely heavily on delivery to make ends meet, never mind a profit.

The charges and percentages that the delivery companies make are astronomical and result in the restaurant effectively working for the deliverer.

More worrying is that some of the chains who offer the all induglence. realise they have open 24 hour kitchens and facilities and therefore have extra capacity so are looking to enter the delivery market with branded names. That could decimate food outlets.

Another outcome from the Covid pandemic, apart from the increase in take aways and deliveries, is that people got used to preparing and eating food at home and realised how nice it is to have food prepared exactly the way they like it and at a lower cost.

What with the all round increase in prices in the past 18 months or so, going out is even more of a luxury item, especially when some establishments have increased their prices or decreased the portion size of the main item (and at some places do both).

It's easy to put chips and salad to fill the plate so it looks as if you are getting a lot for the price.

Not supprised went on Monday night to Paphos front over the building site road at tea for two has the worst cocktails ever and expensive next day went to Protaras to get away from the road works bad service of paphos

I love Cyprus , pathos in particular but haven't been back for a while and covid was not the only reason why ... I just feel Cyprus is really pricing it self out of the tourist market and has done for a very long time and until this is recognized and address then this will continue and business will lose trade
