What if after the Second World War instead of the Labour Party winning the 1945 election under Clement Atlee, the Conservative Party had won under Winston Churchill and had taken charge of the country on their own.
The first thing Winnie would have done, after having given Germany a bloody nose, would have been to gain control of the former area known as Europe. He could have combined it with the British Commonwealth and re-named it all ‘Greater Britain.’ King George VI would have reigned as supremo over the whole area.

Colonise Germany.
Slice it up into manageable lumps, then divide it up to the highest bidders, there must have been enough rich people around even in those times.
Strip the country of all manufacturing capabilities except for the pathetic little Volkswagen let their people drive the peoples’ car. They would then have to buy goods ‘Made in Greater Britain’. Introduced English as their first language and abolish German, who else, except the Germans, spoke it anyway!
That’s that then.

Japan.
Swap it with the Chinese for Hong Kong.
Sorted.

The Middle East.
Assume responsibility for oil production using the Arabs as cheap labour and building up British Petroleum into the leading producer of oil for Greater Britain and the rest of the world.

Russia
Thank them for their help against Hitler and his band of hooligans, rap their knuckles, then tell them to keep to their own area and mind their own business.

U.S.A.
Thank them very much for their help with the Hitler business, we’ll pay for it later or maybe you would be interested in some of what used to be Germany? There’s loads of it there. It could be the next state in USA - but inside Greater Britain.

The pound sterling would be the currency of Greater Britain, get rid of the French franc and all the other metric rubbish. One hundred pennies to the pound stupid! What was wrong with twelve pennies to the shilling, twenty shillings to the pound, two hundred and forty pennies to the pound.
Make the former Europeans learn that system and that would make us all equal.

Increase production of British cars and motorcycles, proper vehicles not like the Volkswagon Beetle, Citroen 2CV or the Fiat 500.

Greater Britain would win all the world wide competitions, The Olympics, The Football World Cup, Motor Racing. Somebody from Greater Britain would have been the champion at everything.

Well that would have set the world to rights after the war, Eventually the Queen (God bless her) would succeed her father, just imagine Prince Phillip and Winston Churchill carving up the kingdom of Greater Britain between them. Smaller countries like America and Russia would be begging us for goods ‘Made in Greater Britain’! The spoils of war!

But No, wait a minute what did actually happen?

Labour was elected with a landslide victory, Clement Atlee allowed all the enemy countries to recover he even gave them money to do it, money which we could have done with to rebuild our country.
They started the National Health Service, which was bound to fail as the population lived longer and longer draining the resources. No foresight you see.
They gave everything away and committed England to help the ‘beaten’ countries to flourish, while poor old England lagged further and further behind. By the time Churchill did get control in 1951 it was too late!

Europe was allowed to form a Common Market and when we tried to join it, Charles DeGaulle had the gall to say NON! After we let him hide in our country for the duration of the war, instead of defending his nation. That’s French gratitude! The big nosed garlic smelling onion seller.

After eventually getting in on the European act we saw the Germans that we beat in the nineteen forties lording it over us, selling us all their cars and grinding our motor industry into the ground with one stomp of a jackboot!!

So we tried to bail out with Brexit and they laughed all the way to the Bundesbank!

Now we are free of the ties to Europe and able to trade with anybody and be truly independent hopefully we can re-establish our rightful place in the world! What if indeed!”

The door opened and a nurse came in and remonstrated with the speaker.
