Hi all,
Does anyone know of a reliable locksmith who won't keep us waiting the usual "few days or so" ?
We arrived home from work yesterday evening around 6.30pm to be greeted by our front door wide open and the complete lock had been removed. The place was ransacked and mobiles, sunglasses, jewellry, make up, purses etc all gone, clothes strewn everywhere and
I was so upset not just for the missing items but the feeling the whole thing has left me with.
The CID came out to speak to us, then this morning a team of guys came to dust for fingerprints & take DNA samples, I'm left feeling so down. We were both supposed to work today but someone has to stay cos if we go out then thats it we can't get back in ! My OH has gone to work but I'm trapped like a prisoner in my own home til we get the locks sorted, so beware they are out there these bloody opportunists !

Sharon & Ted.

OMG Sharon. I am so sorry. It must feel terrible. I don't know of a locksmith, but hopefully someone will come along soon. You would think that the police could recommend someone. Have you asked them?

OMG Sharon, how awful. Are you OK?

Apparently a good reliable guy for locksmith stuff is:

Marinos - 99683470. This came from the people who look after our apartment.

HI, Sharon & Ted are you going to use insurance if so use there locksmith,
have they broken the part that the key goes in to.if so this is held in by 1 screw and can be changed by O/h as long as no damage to door,
if this is the case did the old lock stick out 1/4 inc, the lock must be flush with door but a lot of cyprus locks are not and stick out and are so so easy to get in to.make sure the new 1 is a good fit,so many times they come back cause so easy first time and check all the other door locks are flush.

Sharon / Ted how awful for you both. Like you say its not the fact that some slime ball has burgled your home its the thought of them being in you home- in your space- and looking in your personal things then steeling them. I do hope you get your home made secure quickly and try and get some normality back. Marj

Thanks for the info guys, Verity the police did'nt recommend anyone, just advised us which type of lock to replace it with. Thanks Mandy & Sarah for the locksmiths details we've been in touch and he said he will come out tonight to assess then fit tomorrow.
Yes Debs we're in Universal so be watchful of your own properties all other "Universalarians"! Yes Marj they are slime balls, we're honest folk who go to work to earn a living & these low lifes just take what they want whenever they want !
Thanks for the helpful advice Andy, well worth knowing.
We're ok but now its sinking in we both feel angry now !
Sharon & Ted

Sorry to hear the news, join the club.
I would have said these people were not opportunist if they have gone to the trouble of removing a lock but Andy's post was very interesting and maybe other ex pats could think about their locks and what he has said.
Hope your insurance company sorts you out. Don't despair these things happen, you didn';t get hurt, so try to be positive.
Make sure you make it harder for the low life to do it again.
Best Wishes, Gary

This is so terrible, I hope they catch the pigs

Do they have a 'neighbour hood watch' type of thing in Universal with so many ex-pats living there :? If not, maybe they should start one up, or get some cctv camera's setup in peoples homes to help guard against future burgleries :?

Sorry to hear of this breakin, Im lucky as weve never been done either here or over there. But tell me please, did you have any particular giveaways that you were out.
Do you leave net curtains open?
Are goodies visable from the street or walkways?
Do you have a key safe box installed?

We stay near to the Paphos Gardens apartments and last year there where loads of break ins in the short time we were there , i have to say that they were all on the ground floors and a distance from the roads. Hope you are feeling better i cant begin to imagine how you feel, hopefully it wont be long before you feel safe again.

Hi guys, thanks for all your support and good advice too.
We've had all the work done and hopefully will be safer now.
Been busy sorting the Ins. etc and also discovered through our developer (whom I contacted to inform them that burglars are around and that we'd been burgled) That the two apts above us were broken into the DAY BEFORE we were !!!! And they never informed anyone on the complex to be vigilant or to pass it on to neighbours, which might have deterred the intruders from breaking into ours. So naturally we are so annoyed with the lack of communication.. :banghead
But anyway its onwards & upwards and don't let the b....... grind you down !
Again thanks for all the help, its like havin an extended family in times of need.
And yes Mandy, Marinos is defo some nice eye candy, wondered why Ted was hanging around making sure I was'nt alone with him. LOL
And his assistant who came with him on Monday morning was a bit of alright too.Mmmmm

Glad you have got it all sorted Sharon. What type of lock did you have (have we got) was it one of the ones pictured in this thread?

Did the developer say that they were going to put key pads on the doors or am I just wishful thinking?!

Hi Sarah,
We had the correct one pictured by Andy on this thread but we have now had a high security one fitted also two additional deadbolts fitted plus window and patio strong locks too.
Your lock is the same as the other ones on your floor and seems good.
I mentioned the keypad request again to developer and told them it was months since we put a request for a quote for the system and we still have'nt had even a quote. He said they were very sorry and that he'd chase it up.... but don't hold your breath !

Hi all,
Just an update on the burglary, which happened to us just over a month ago. The CID called on us yesterday evening to inform us they had caught the culprit who broke in to our place and actually had him outside our front door handcuffed to another policeman, well we were so glad they caught him but could'nt believe they brought him to the door to face us ! Maybe its a shame thing to make him feel bad like making a child take a sweet back to a shop they'd stolen it from or maybe its just the way things are done here but result.... they got him anyway, apparently they arrested him that same evening and matched his DNA or fingerprints and bingo!!!
They then took him upstairs to the apt above us to inform the owners there whom he also broke into.
So then today received a call that 5 bags of items have been recovered ( from other break ins also I presume)and would we go to the station tomorrow to see if any of it is ours so hopefully we'll get our stuff back too. There were three of them working together but two have been in custody and the third they were just waiting to get, all are from the former Yugoslavia and police have said they'll be jailed for 5 years here then deported back to were they came from.
Sharon & tTed

Sharon that is good news and closure for you and Ted.
I'm all for naming and shaming, strange moment for you though to come face to face with the offender, but not a bad thing I hope he felt some remorse.

Hi peeps,
Well went to the police station yesterday (which was like stepping back in time 40 yrs or so) but in a nice way. They were very nice too and explained that they would go to prison and get anything from 5 to 7yrs, serve their time in Nicosia and then be deported back to their own country.
The CID chap said to me " Our sentencing/Court justice system is the same as England"......Well I didn't want to disillusion the poor chap and start to explain how the UK criminals get away with murder nowadays.!!
But anyway all we got back was one pair of sunglasses & case, I was quite disappointed as I had hoped that we would have got most of it back.
No Sarah we were'nt allowed to say anything to him when the police brought him to the door and Ted made to go out to him but the policeman said no, not to approach him :banghead
Yes Jan it was a strange situation facing him and I do hope we get to hear the outcome of their trial, but like you say it will be closure for us.

Hi All

First of all I am sorry to here Beeshar that you had a break-in it doesn’t matter what part of Europe your in this will happen hopefully not on a to regular basis in Cyprus!

The main thing is your safe and to have now taken the measure to hopefully stop such a thing happening in the future.

As a new member (first post..Great site by the way) I see that a few members have made comments about the sentence hopefully this scum bag will get :congrats ….As a serving Prison Officer of over twenty years if he does get 5 years or more and deportation that has to be one good result …we in the service have seen so many like this one come in just doing a few months and getting half off for so called good behaviour. Deportation never seems to be mentioned.

Like I said I have only just come across your site and a lot to get through….Myself and the better half are over to sunny Cyprus next year just to look at locations rather than anything else for our retirement in what seems a eternity (8 years) hopefully we can buy the house we want a few years before that depends how we get on with our investments…..sorry to waffle on off subject I promise to behave myself in the future.

Richie :D

You're in good company here and as Jan said I think theres a few prison officers here also a few police members.I agree with you it will be a good result and much better than the punishment given in UK.
Look forward to hearing more from you on PP.

Welcome Ritchie,

Good to have you on board & :goodpost

Imo I think the UK Law sucks, like you said, if they get a 6 month sentence they normally get out after 2-3 months so whats the point, they don't learn anything from it, they know they'll get a warm bed, 3 meals a day & paid for doing something inside. Personally I think the British justice system seriously needs to toughen up on these people & build more prisons & give fewer benifits, that way it will be classed as 'hard time' instead of butlins

Hi Pete and the rest of you good folk for the nice welcome.

As for your last (quoted) post Pete :clap :clap :clap Have you ever thought of going into politics?.... You would go a long way with a manifesto like that :congrats

The problem we have now is we have to many Do-Gooder's on the top seats of all political parties that have jumped on the bandwagon of "they are not sentenced for there crime to be punished but to be reabilitated"

What a load of rubbish...... these individuals have committed crimes been found guilty by the courts of this land.......There sentence should be in my opinion one of firstly Punishment in a austere environment and secondly rehabilitation. The rehabilitaion side of it should be just that rehabilitaion and if the individual does not want to comply He/She should not be released if they still pose a danger to the general public.

As for that one breaking into Beershar's house in this country he would have admitted to another 30/40 offences got off with either a suspended sentence (WOW) or even a probation order (BiGGER WOW)

Yet again he would have walked out of court with two fingers up to the court and society.....I know in this country we are all so complacent with a break in...it is not just a break in it is someone coming into your home trashing and stealing what ever they want and leaving that person angry, devastated, feeling vulnerable, and to top it all this so called person gets away with it.

Sorry to waffle on again a subject very close to heart roll on 8 years :celebrate

I actually like the Indonese way of dealing with prisoners, they're put them into a 6x8 cell with a concrete bed & then its left to the family to look after them, to feed & cloth them :D They have real hard labour when out of their cells & it's the opposite end of the scale to the British prisons

So I'd be a good MP then :? I wonder how many votes I'd get
