Well, i have to say what a lovely, lovely lady she was. She spoke to my parents about what help is available to them and, without any input from me, she told them it was extremely unrealistic for them to expect me to be able to look after them single handedly. I could have kissed her at that point!!

No, seriously though, she talked their options through with them and has suggested that we implement a basic care plan to start with for my mum. They are still both trying to resist this from happening but i do think that it is starting to register with them that this needs to happen.

So, i feel a lot more optimistic about the future, whatever the outcome, and i am so glad i finally got the chance to speak to someone who has been able to advise me and help my parents.

:congrats To the Macmillan Trust, i say. What a wonderful job they do.

hi marina,
glad the macmillan service has been a great help to you and your parents.
your parents will resist a little it must be awful to see your independance slipping away, however they will come to appreciate the help and hope fully build a relationship with the people who provide the care, as you will, and they will be a great support for you all during this difficult time.
good luck with this journey it will be difficult for you all, but hopefully you will have plenty of support to guide you through it.
take care and keep us updated!
kathryn

:goodpost Kathryn I couldn't have put it better myself.

Marina what you wrote is what I was expecting to read and the out come is looking positive for you all especially now care plans will be in place.
Believe me when I say Mum and Dad will adjust and actually the day will come when they will look forward to the Nurse/Macmillan visiting.

Couldn't help but compare your first post to your most recent posts and how they have changed, I think knowing you are not on your own, there is an enormous amount of help and support out there has helped you to balance your view and opinions, which is great. Yes there are difficult days ahead but you will cope and remember we are all here for you to sound off anytime you like.

Jan :) :)

Hi Marina,

Glad you got the help you need from the Macmillan Nurses and feel a lot more optimistic. Try and stay as positive as you can under the circumstances. Our thoughts are with you :bearhug

Also had a visit from District Nurse today and she has arranged for some equipment for mom to use to get around the house. Awaiting contact from the Occupational Therapist to come and assess what else she may need and Social Services to arrange care plan.

Thanks to all of you again. I'm feeling much more positive than i was at the start of the week, that's for sure.

Glad you are feeling more positive Marina and I hope your parents think about what they have been told and appreciate that you aren't able to carry the full load on your own and accept help.

I sometimes think that it's older people's pride that gets in the way and it stops them from asking/accepting help from 'outsiders' but I am sure when they realise it is for the best they will come round to your way of thinking and, as has been previously said, they will actually look forward to the help.

Look after yourself and I am sure the rest will all fall into place very soon.

Glad you are getting the support you need Marina. Someone has to care for the carers.

I am forever grateful for the district nurse who came to my Mum when she was dying. Although I am a nurse myself it was a relief to have someone else supporting me and just affirming that there was nothing more I could do to relieve Mum's suffering.

I wasn't impressed with the Macmillan nurse that came out, but that doesn't mean that every Macmillan nurse is going to be the same. I am pleased you have a good one coming to you. It can make all the difference.

Good luck with it all Marina ~ Hope it all goes from strength to strength and that the extra help being draft in will also take some of the pressure of you and your parents. It's a difficult time for you all as you adjust to living with the differing conditions, unsettling and drifting emotions and new ways of "being and coping". Thoughts and prayers with you all x
