The above photograph was sent to the Famagusta Gazette from the Cyprus Green Party and was accompanied with the following text:

"Warning of future disaster, this is not a landslide or earthquake in China. It is the result of a building development in Peyia," read the email.

The subject line read :"When will it collapse?"

The photograph shows a pavement and road that runs next to a housing estate. The party wonder if the problem will be fixed before or after a tragedy occurs.

Can I ask why would you think this 'News Item' was more pertinent to the Day 2 Day Life forum Brian :?

I know the road that is on the photograph, if it is road I am thinking it is the back of Pegeia Cottages A and B. There is a road that collapsed at the back of Nicoletta Court after a horrendous storm not so long back. My neighbours weren't allowed to go into the garden, which was a bit scary

Slightly off the subject, do you have a dog that you take for a walk by the stadium of an evening Frank. I am sure it was you, but didn't want to say hello just in case it wasn't you then I would have sounded a right plonker.

I'll go now.

Just be careful where you walk!!

Debbie

Hi Debbie,

Was that the storms of Oct 06 when we had flash floods & 2 people died when their car was washed off the road :? If so, I know it well but I don't know about this road in Peyia but saying that, wasn't there a hotel around that area that lost half of its foundations the same storms :?

If these buildings are on the coast line, then sea erosion will do that to the land & has been doing it for thousands of years  nothing can stop mother nature in her quest to reclaim land over run by humans

Yes it was the storms of 06. The council were very quick in coming to get it made safe I must admit but it was amazing how much damage was done. We are told that there used be be a river which flowed through our complex and was divered for the complex to be built. The river was just trying to find its normal route, hence all the damage.

The road is no where near the sea, it is virtually in the village of Pegeia, quite a long way up the hill. The road is very near a ravine, and just below it is a little dirt track which I sometime drive over to get to the village. alomg with many other people, it is a short cut.

Debbie

So its not a recent problem then & has been repaired by the developer/council :?

So basically the post JGG put up, even though it was something the 'Green Party' apparently sent to the tabloids stating :"When will it collapse?" is untrue

Its something that has since been repaired & have not had any further problems with :?

This is a problem when people decide to build on land where water naturally runs, we see it in the UK with the flood plains flooding houses which have been built there, so what makes those developers any different to the one's in Cyprus :? :?

Hi Pete,

No sorry this road has not been repaired, it was the just below it on Nicoletta Court 11 that was repaired so quickly. This road is just above it on the opposite side of the ravine, but this is apparantly where the river was supposed to go and then come dowm through our complex.

Natural water will always try to find it's natural route, and you are correct, why build there.

Oic, so the picture is probably a current one, not an old one dug up for propaganda against the developers :?

Oh this is getting to confusing now :banghead :manic

Well, if anyone has been up near the school road recently they would have seen the same thing

All I can say is we live directly opposite a masive developement and it beggars belief thier building tactics

They actually undermined a house to provide a "supporting" wall!!!! and in an area that is know for landslides!!!

Dont even get me started on the complete inconsideration of other residents!!!! :banghead
