Hi All,
Just to show I wasn't on a complete downer with everything last week when I made the post slating Fat Mamas and to redress the balance, I'd like to tell everyone about last Fridays culinary adventure.
On the recommendations of a friend we tried the Devonshire Bar Restaurant just of Tomb of the Kings. Its tucked up back behind Oliveros, and we’d most likely have missed it or not considered it at all if we hadn’t been told where it was.
What a difference from the week before at FM’s, The Devonshire had fantastic friendly service, the food was absolutely brilliant, child friendly, and very very reasonably priced. Within seconds of arriving the waitress (a very nice Irish lady) produced a high chair, made a fuss of the baby and generally made us feel very welcome. Rapidly followed by and explanation of the “specials” and the menu. The owner (or rather one of) came out and introduced himself and told us if there was anything he could do just ask. The thing about it was it was all genuine and not that false. I’m only being nice to you because I want a tip type place. The staff were happy you were there and happy and willing to help.
The choice on the menu is not exactly huge but certainly sufficient, with a good selection of simple home cooked foods. Apparently the place is owned by two brothers, one out front and one in the kitchen.
Mrs S, had the prawn cocktail, followed by fish and chips, I had the home made pate to start, followed by a wonderful pork steak with garlic and mushroom sauce, fresh veggies, home made chips, and of course a small side of mushrooms. Just not to appear rude you understand I accepted the offer of a dessert, fresh Greek yogurt with honey and almonds.
All I can say is fantastic, it was an absolute pleasure to eat there.
Being a bit of a tight git as well, another good part was getting the bill. The whole lot was very reasonably priced, and I went away feeling like I’d definitely had value for money.
We were early (due to baby S) but as the evening went on I quickly realised as other people arrived, the place relies almost solely on repeat custom…. Well they’ll definitely be mine….. next time I’m home I’m off down there again !
Anyway, cheers for now
Ian PS Also discovered a little art café place in Mesa Chorio which was also excellent….
