I walked up to the postal agency this morning at around 11.20 a.m. as I have a couple of airmail letters to post. It was closed (I never know when it is open as it doesn't seem to have a regular time). There were some guys in the kafenio and they gesticulated that I should leave the letters with the guy who was serving in the kafenio. I asked about paying but was told to come back "avrio". So I said I would be working tomorrow, and was told to just come back another day.

All this in pidgeon English and a smattering of Greek on my part.

I do hope that the letters get posted. And I have no idea how I am going to make the guy in the postal agency understand why I am giving him money when I finally turn up to pay my dues.

Cyprus living. Brings a smile to my lips on a daily basis. :D

I may have told this story before ...?

my wife went into the old town for business , not shopping.
By chance she saw a pair of shoes in a shop window that she liked
so she went in to try them on, (as she does) they were fine, so she got out her purse to pay,
then noticed that she had not taken much cash with her, as she never intended to shop.
she was 10cyp short of the price, the woman looked at her and said , I have saw you a few times do you live here .. my wife said yes ,, then the woman said ,
take the shoes with you now, and just drop the 10cyp in the next time you pass..

In some respects im playing devils advocate but i've only ever lived in large towns and cities in England but does it never happen in the remote country villages in UK ? i visit my mum in deepest Norfolk and the folk there are pretty friendly and nosy .. just like the locals in Kissonerga :) !

Having said that i still owe a shop CY£5 for some handles i was short of cash for ... and being able to use a cheque in a shop without a guarantee card - how trusting.

my mum and dad were out in january to sort out there house for thier move in febuary and they hired a car from one of the local places while they were out, on returning they said they would need thecar for a week or two when they returned in febuary till they bought a car, they guy who owned the place just said no probs will leave the car at the airport... keys will be in the boot, my dad tried to pay him and he just said pay when you get over here, no rush just pop in or pay when you return the car!!! my parents were really worried the car would not be waiting as said...... but it was! what great trust these folks have!!!

Alastair and I bought paint, worth Euro 80, from The Paint Warehouse in Geriskipou [the second time we had been in]. The JCC Card machine wasn't working - he said 'no problem, just pay the next time you are in'. We went home with the paint - and returned five days later to pay, the machine still wasn't working, but this time we had taken enough cash, as we couldn't have it on our conscience! How trusting - but guess where we will be going the next time we wish paint?

We have experienced this many times over the years and recently just a few weeks ago.

Local bar near harbour getting ready to open the next day, we were with another couple and sat down, owner came, we ordered drinks, owner sat with us having a drink, put out crisps for us to eat, had another drink, came to pay he refused payment and said "I enjoyed your company".

Big Dutch is correct it does happen regular up here in the Highlands, but we are rural and remote and yes the locals are friendly and very nosey :!:

Jan :) :)

And the locals all know each other in the Highlands. That is a difference between the UK and here. Here they will do the same for a stranger.

It is all about trust and I think the Cypriots really do trust the Brits, in all my 15yrs of visiting Cyprus I've never found it to be any different.

Our village is in a holiday area and the population during the season swells from 300 to over 1000 every week, 60% are foreign visitors from Cyprus too and 40% home visitors. Inevitable with such large numbers some run into difficulties or other problems every week from illness, injury, lost passports etc but there is an unwritten rule we do what needs to be done to help and if this means a 60mile round trip to the hospital we do it and expect nothing in return.

We have run a B+B for two years and I couldn't begin to count the number of strangers who have knocked on the door late at night looking for a bed :!: and we have been full, but we bring them in, sit them down with a cup of tea and hit the phone to find them a bed for the night, regardless of time because it becomes our responsibility strangers or not it's what we do across the board here and I witness it all the time. There are still areas like this throughout the UK but in the main are rural.

Jan :) :)
