This has probably been ask before, but couldn't find it when I searched.

We went to the Paphos Immigration Office for the first time this morning.

Got some MEU1A forms and a date to go back on the 7 July (how long!). They didn't seem to care about the ARC (yellow/pink slip) any more.

We are planning to set up our company. We've already agreed to carry on working for our old UK companies as it can all be done online.

Does this class us as self-employed then?
If we are self-employed, there's a bit on the form about "Date of Registration with the Social Securities Services (please atthacedf proof of registration)"

Before I end up :manic :banghead
Anyone help or advise?

we still work for a uk company using the net and are classed here as "self employed".Its a relatively new concept here so there isn't a box for us lot yet! You'll need to register with tax and social insurance but you didn't used to be able to do this until you'd got your number from immigration. Things may have changed, its been a couple of years since we did it.
We sorted most things ourselves and used Elizabeth Welch when the going got difficult with tax. She also sorted our uk tax situation and saved us a few bob.

Its not so much there isn't a box, its because it can't work that way. If you are employed in Cyprus and paying Cyprus PAYE then you need to do this through a Cyprus company which will also contribute to SI as the employer. Your UK non-Cyprus employer cannot pay your Cyprus SI contributions so by default you are self-employed. Might as well just invoice your services back to the UK and the UK firm treats you as a consultant rather than an employee.

Depending on your projected turnover it might be an idea to create a limited company and instead of paying top band income tax at 30% you employ yourself, in the 0% band income, pay 10% on the net profit of the company as corporation tax, and then 15% "Defense tax" on 75% of net profit after tax . So out of example, €60k income you pay UPTO (if no expenses!) €12k which is circa 20% of your turnover against circa 24% if you are self-employed. Numbers would need checking by a professional.

Thanks, BigDutch and Zebedee

Yes, we are going to be consultants and set up our own company (Looking for an good accountant to help with that). Sorry, didn't explain myself very well.

It's just this bit on the MEU1A forms about proof of Registration with the Social Securities Services if self-employed. But I thought we would get that until we set up our company. But we were told by 1 accountant that we can't set up a business before we registrate with immigration.

Sort chicken and egg situation. What do order are we suppose to do these things in?

I'm also slightly confused that we weren't give an ARC (yellow/pink slip) that I've seem on a few website etc.

And where is Social Securities Services Office?

Getting myself so confused!

Maybe contact [email protected] to clarify your Social Insurance situation as this guy Loucas was helpful when i came nearly 2 years ago with similar situation/intention as yourself. Once i had the document from SID i could then get my ARC from Immigration. After being "self employed" and paying contributions you are then at least "up and running" and can then register a ltd firm but be prepared for 2-3 month wait to get the company certified !

Social Insurance is here shown by green arrow

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=34.7711%C2%B0,32.4311%C2%B0&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17&iwloc=addr

As Zebedee said the situation doesn't fit in a box (it can't for logical reasons) so you are potentially going to come up against people that aren't sure how to handle you ..... if you are going to invoice approx €15,000 you need to be VAT registered too ... and you need to register at income tax. The accountant i used i would recommend as he did what was necessary for me - still waiting invoice though   so can't tell you if good value.

Thanks for the directions, BigDutch. Went Social Insurance place today and got lots of forms in Greek.
Shame my Greek is none existance at the moment. I really should start learning.

Getting to a few of our neighbours now. One of them suggested a company called ProACT

http://www.proactpartnership.com/

Sounds/looks like they may be good. I may try them. Anyone heard of them/used them?

Have to agree with Neil - Yannakis Lazarou is the best accountant here and his english is perfect. He is also a really nice and helpful guy. We have used him for 6 years and we wouldn't use anyone else now.
