Just thought I would quickly pop on here to say that we came back from the North of Cyprus yesterday afternoon after spending an amazing three nights there this week. We crossed through at Ag. Nik into Famagusta, spent a night along the Panhandle, went right to the tip Indiana Jones style using some non-existent roads (Phil had to get out of the car in places and fill trenches with rocks and guide me across them) which gave us some fabulous views. Then we drove to Kyrenia and did the tourist thing - the harbour and Bellapaix - before driving through Lapta and over to Morphu where we crossed the border and came back via Pyrgos.

We all feel two stones heavier - the food has been good and was certainly plentiful.

I will post photos in a few days. Our friends are still here, so I shalln't be on PP until after the weekend, as we are still on holiday with them.

Have a great weekend everyone - whatever you are doing. :D

Glad you had a good time Verity. I'd be interested to see what you thought of Morphou. When we went I felt that everyone was staring at us, maybe it was our GC car as it seemed like we were the only tourists around, and I thought there were more soldiers dotted everywhere with guns poised

Hope you like these photos -

We crossed to the North via Agia Nik and this mosque was in Famagusta.

Image

We were surprised to find that when you drive in you are in the area right by the cordoned off part of Famagusta where the hotels are that have stood empty since 1974. We sat and had coffee in a small cafe - cost us €3 and the toilets were spotless (the ladies will be interested to know that  ).

The Turkish flag is evident wherever you go -

Image

We stayed one night at Balci Plaza which is owned by Hassan who has lived in the UK for many years. This is the private beach - note the beach babes  -

Image

This shows the backdrop at Balci Plaza. Some strange woman got into the photo -

Image

Sunset from the roof of the restaurant where Hassan is building a honeymoon suite and a roof garden -

Image

Heading further along to the tip of the Panhandle there are some Roman sites -

Image

A view along the way - this is when we had begun our off road experience -

Image

Watch out for the wild donkeys - Hassan said they have wandered on to his land before now, but these were almost at the very tip of the Panhandle -

Image

We risked life and limb on our off road adventure to find this monastry - there is a safer road, but Indianna Phillipos felt adventurous. I believe it is called Apostollos Andreas and it is in Karpazia towards the end of the Panhandle. The water there is supposed to cure you of your ills - but I wasn't terribly impressed by the state of the place or the hygiene. So I remain uncured.

Image

There are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, it's a bugger to change the road you're on .....

Image

Finding views like this made the off road experience worth it -

Image

One of the better roads we travelled that day .....

Image

Kyrenia Harbour .....

Image

And again .....

Image

Bellapaix Abbey .....

Image

Kyrenia taken from Bellapaix .....

Image

And finally, the view looking back towards Morphu Bay, on the way back towards Pyrgos once we had crossed the border at Morphu .....

Pics are fab Verity, Im sure I would have had some nice ones had I not have lost the teens passport!

So instead of our jaunt up North, we had a lovely weekend in Limassol. I know, only down the road but we all treated it like a proper holiday.

Once the Teens passport has resurfaced(or more likely been replaced) then we'll try again.

Thanks Verity for the photos.
They took me back a bit, even though I haven't been to the places you visited, the North really has some beautiful places.
I have an Aunt who lives in Kyrenia. Some of our family are out there now.
It's such a shame more peole don't visit as it really is lovely.
Thanks Again enjoyed them,
Gary ( one handed !)

Stunning Pictures Verity

I am so looking frward to our trip next weekend.

Can you cross the border into North at Morphu?? Can you get care insurance at all border points?

You were very brave going soo far off road, but scenery looked stunning and worthwhile.

Chris

   @ Tanny. It feels like a foreign country. The way some of the women dress, especially in the villages, is different to the way they women dress over this side. The Turkish flags are noticeable everywhere, even in the smallest of villages.

Chris, to answer your question - yes, you can cross at Morphu and you should be able to get insurance there as they don't let you across without it. It is only third party insurance. Do you have your own car over here? You probably know, but you can't cross in a hire car. The insurance we have lasts for one month and I am sorely tempted to go back again for a weekend in a couple of weeks time. Our problem is that we have the dog and cat to think about so we can't just up and go. Which is why we won't have any more animals once Jessie-mou has departed this life. Freedom!

Glad to share the photos. After all, it is part of the country in which we live even if it is divided by politics.

Verity. Did you travel back from occupied areas at Astromeritis also how did you get to Pyrgos from there over troodos and kykkos or ... ?

Phil says we came through Astromeritis. We crossed the border just outside Morphu (Guzelyurt) at Yuk. Bostanci. Went through Astromeritis and took a right turn for Troodos and Kykkos but along there is a right turn at a sign for Pergos. We just followed that road.
