What is your suggestions for a good reliable anti virus/ malware programme for iMac. A simple google search kicks up some contenders but the reviews seem to be by people who are tech savvy.

As long as your OS has been updated to the latest version this is dealt with under the hood and behind the scenes by Apple

It will depend on the age of the machine you refer to and whether it is still supported for updates

As a Unix-based operating system the Mac OS is by its very nature sandboxed. It's like having a series of fire doors - even if malware gains access to your Mac, it is unable to spread to the heart of the machine

I have used Macs more or less exclusively for 12 years now

Four words: "You don't need it". Like Mirek says.

Been using a Mac without security for 10 years or more. Never once had an issue. Same goes for son in UK and daughter in Cyprus who've also been using Macs for 10 years. They've never had issues either.

Thanks Yak and Mirek, being the first Mac, I kinda feel naked without one. Its like driving without the seat belt, just doesn't feel right.

To protect your Mac from computer viruses:
- get two metal baths
- sit with your Mac into one
- cover by second
- enjoy !

:D

It would seem that not all "experts" agree.

People have given me all sorts of dire warnings over the years. And here I am, 10 years on, still without a virus to my name. Never needed to take my Mac in for any kind of remedial work in 10 years either.

In the very early days, when I also bought a Macbook Pro, I asked the head technician in a Apple store in the States about security software. I asked him, do I need it. He said "no". I asked him, "do you use security". He said "no". That was good enough for me.

How many hundreds of millions of people use iPads (with basically the same iOS) without security?

The people who say you need security on a Mac usually have a vested interest for doing so. I'll stay without thanks ;)

Seems selfish to me. For example an AV program on your MAC would prevent you possibly forwarding on Windows Viruses to Windows users. Many companies will not allow MAC computers to connect to their corporate network without some form of Virus scanning for this reason.

If you have no Antivirus Software on your Mac how can you be so sure it's not riddled with unwanted programs? It's not like computer viruses are coded to announce their presence

The good Malware Scanner "malwarebytes" is available for OSX and detects all kinds of stealth software and changes to popular web browsers to allow targeted advertising to their users.

Seems I will have to get something as the machine has slowed considerably over the last 3-4 days and bank has just informed us that card have been cloned and used in USA, so I think an AV is necessary. What do you iMac users use where you have one.

I can only speak as I find...and in the past 10 years I and family members (we all use Macs) have never had a virus issue.

Of course, if you open an attachment on a dodgy email that comes from someone you don't know, you're at risk. But then, most of us know not to do that.

I clean out every few days with CCleaner and use Memory Clean to keep speeds up. I believe my Mac to be as fast now as when I bought it around 5 years ago.
