Mrs mikenpat and I have just been to an excellent Barbecue at Kolios Butchers. We were welcomed with open arms by Leonides and given wine and all kinds of barbecued meat and haloumi. Every time we thought about leaving, more food appeared and more wine, so we stayed. There were dozens of people there all enjoying Tsinopemti Day also known as 'Stinky Thursday' it is the last day that Cypriots eat meat before Lent.
Thank you to the Kolios family for their community spirit and generosity.
Well done
Not quite the last day they eat meat before Lent! This year that day will be Sunday February 18th which is the day before the first day of Lent AKA Green Monday. It's tradition that most of the butchers cook souvla for the masses on Stinky Thursday, and the school children all get some at school aswell as an early finish!
We had an appointment in a small village outside Limassol yesterday and there seemed to have been rather too much beer drunk as there was a lively scrum outside the village butcher there and the police had been called!!
Only in Cyprus...!!
