We've had probs with Skype for several weeks now - logging in, reception, response from uk and vice versa. Fed up with it.

Had same problem but managed to resolve it by contacting Skype, you need to check what version you are using, the recent version is 8.29.

Tried to upgrade to newer version and it would not work, uninstalled old version and reinstalled new version and it worked first time, as your PC stores some of the data you may not lose your contacts.

The new Skype is a poor substitute for the old one, but Microsoft is not listening. Windows 10 also installs a different version of Skype which is on all the time, once started and can only be stopped through Windows task manager, so if using the new desktop version, uninstall the other one or they will conflict and the desktop version will start the Windows version. The Windows version has more bells and whistles, but the imability to turn it off when not in use is its biggest failing.

Note that the new desktop version will show you on line and available even when the PC is turned off, unless you set the Skype status to invisible before you close Skype or the PC.

I have back channels to Microsoft and have been trying to get them to fix these anomalies without much success. But the latest version 8.30 is an improvement on the earlier ones.

Can't you disable it in msconfig?
