Hello, we have Cypriot wills that were registered with the courts several years ago. We have heard that we need to add a ‘codicil?’ to the wills to take on Uk as opposed to Cypriot law. We have contacted our solicitors who recommend we make new wills, they say their charges to do this is 350 Euro each plus vat and 30 Euro each for registering at the courts. This seems massively excessive, does anybody have advice please?

Hi Suzi,

Try Gwenny's Red Tape Services in Paphos, she is a very helpful person and will point you in the right direction her number is 26945625, just google it and click on her site. Very helpful she sorted out all my legal bits and bobs and speaks very good English.

Indeed, after the amendment of the succession law in 2015, there is a need to add a clause that the applicable law is the English law, so that to avoid the application of the Cyrpus succession system. You can make a codicil or a new Will. Provided that you have already a Will and you need no other changes, which may need legal review, you can draft a new one by yourself (the same one with this additional provision) and visit the Court to register it in replacement of the previous. Please let me know if you need any proposal or help.

Thankyou for your replies, especially from Christie, we are going to return to uk to get a copy of our original wills, we will then retype them with the additional paragraph stating we chose Uk law and we will then go to the courts to register them, which we believe is necessary. The new wills will supersede the old wills.

I would only recommend a solicitor who has specialist knowledge about Wills and Probate to draw up and/or execute a Will.
