A couple of weeks ago I was made aware that criminals are using contact less payment devices to steal money from peoples accounts.

They have a device that looks like a mobile phone, but is has three coloured buttons just like a card payment machine.

This is how they do it, they type in an amount usually around the €20 to €30 mark on the device.

Then they walk past someone with the device held at the height of your back pocket, as close as they can so the device takes a payment from the card.

This can happen anywhere at any time and you will not know about it till you get your bank statement, which by then is to late the money has gone.

I have just purchased a RFID proof wallet to keep my cards in when I am out of the house.

Just a heads up for all the members about this way of stealing from people

I have had a RFID wallet for some time now, but there are increasing comments about their effectiveness.

Another alternative that I have ordered is the RFID card protector, which is credit card sized and can be placed in any wallet of bag to protect cards. You can also put one inside your passport, to stop the chip in it from being scanned.

Yes I have a RFID purse

The card sounds a great idea to use in existing wallets and purses

What are the chances of this crime happening (especially in Cyprus)?

The could happen anywhere so it's better to be safe than sorry.
A few months after we came to Cyprus my bank card was stopped.
It turned out the my details had been copied and 2 people tried to make small with drawls from our account.
On the same day 1 in Lebanon and the other in Peru.

My Bank of Cyprus card will only allow payments up to €10. Anything more than that still requires my P.I.N number as well.
I always get a txt immediately on my phone whenever a payment has been authorized.
