Just spent 5 days in Paphos seeing my solicitor after managing to sell my apartment after 5 months on the market.
Busy week sorting things out, but all done now.

One thing I did notice was the discourtesy of local drivers, both Cypriots and expats, to drivers with hire cars.
I have driven my own car in Cyprus for over 5 years and never had the same experience as I had this last week.

Yesterday we went from Konia to Kennedy Square for lunch with friends. I had people pull out on me 2 or 3 times; not just a 50 yard pull out, but ones where you need to almost do an emergency stop. I needed to sound my horn on a few occasions to people about to change lanes. Pedestrians just launched themselves into traffic in front of me.
Was it because I was driving a red plated car? Was it because my driving has changed since the end of October, when I sold my Cyprus reg car? I think the first is the answer.

No wonder travel websites warn you about the standard of local drivers.

Anyway, I've enjoyed reading and posting on this forum and will probably stalk for a while. I think that as I won't be a regular visitor to the island I probably won't post as often as before though.

Big Nev

Good luck in your new life in UK.

As a longtime IAM Member, I try and give "red plates" time to correct errors and maintain the 2 second rule when travelling behind them. I try and not let my driving standards fall, but agree at times it's very frustrating.

Regards

Alan

Not going to spend much time in UK, Alan.

The money from the sale will be put to good use.
Off across the pond on 4 occasions next year already.

Barbados, Vegas, Antigua, South Carolina.
Then maybe New Zealand early 2019.

More places to visit that Paphos Harbour
At least when you rent a car in USA it's nor so obvious.

From my experience of driving red plated cars here many times during visits here since about 2005, and driving on regular plates since we moved here earlier this year, many red plated car drivers are worse than the locals, and that is saying something I can say.
(not including myself or Big Nev)
Amos.

I too give red plates more room, as very probably the driver is unfamiliar with paphos, unfamiliar with the road layout and local habits and most of all unfamiliar with driving on the left, so anyone who doesn't give them space is an idiot and looking to crash !

I noticed in "north" Cyprus they no longer use red plates for hire cars.
Maybe (?) that would be a good idea here in the "south".

Amos my friend, that will never happen, it is the only way the locals know who to fleece when they pull up in hire cars,.
They say there are three rates here 1. Cypriot rates 2. Resident rates and 3 Tourist rates, so red plates are here to stay.
