Pricing and indication of prices here in Cyprus drive me nuts. Products like butter or drinks for example are being sold in a wide variety of package sizes and mots times it is very difficult to compare prices between products on a per kilo or per litre basis, which one must do when intending to shop economically.

Thankfully the EU has brought some clarity and uniformity to consumer rights. One of the areas covered is consumer pricing and indication of prices both in shop and in advertising. In short, EU Directive 98/6 demands:
- The selling price and the unit price shall be indicated for all products referred to in Article 1, the indication of the unit price being subject to
the provisions of Article 5. The unit price need not be indicated if it is identical to the sales price….
- Any advertisement which mentions the selling price of products … shall also indicate the unit price….
- The selling price and the unit price must be unambiguous, easily identifiable and clearly legible.
- In this, unit price shall mean the final price, including VAT and all other taxes, for one kilogramme, one litre, one metre, one square metre
or one cubic metre of the product or a different single unit of quantity which is widely and customarily used in the Member State...

Admittedly, a EU Directive is not an EU Regulation and as such requires transposition into national law. However, the directive had long been in force before Cyprus joined the EU. The website of the relevant ministry here in Cyprus claims:

“The indication of prices of products - national law is in accordance with Directive 98/6/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 February 1998 which makes it compulsory to indicate the selling price and the unit price of all products offered by traders to consumers, in order to improve consumer information and to facilitate price comparisons. Prices must be unambiguous, easily identifiable and clearly legible.” (the link und “national law”, however, does not work)

So I wonder:

Why do we as consumers tolerate shops and supermarkets violating this law permanently? Against our interest?

In Paphos these days:

Unit prices at shelves are either not given or given in units other than described or in such small print that they can hardly be read. Also they are not updates when discounts are offered. It is thus impossible to work out the real cost of product without carrying a calculator

In advertisements and “offer” flyers unit prices are never indicated except for bulk products

I wonder, would anybody like to join a campaign directed changing this? Targeting ministries and newspapers?
