A municipality with a set ? what do you think?

The wealthy Russian couple at the centre of a controversy over their plans to wed on a Polis beach used by nesting turtles would have been serenaded by superstars Christina Aguilera and Justin Bieber.

The authorities revoked the permit for the ceremony to take place on the beach in front of the luxurious Anassa Hotel after it was revealed bulldozers had been brought in to flatten the area. The beach is used by nesting turtles and also falls within a Natura 2000 protected area.

There are all manner of conflicting stories about this, with some saying that the beach is not used by turtles and the picture in the paper has been photoshopped and also that the groom is South African, not Russian.

No idea what is true, but it does seem certain that the local mukhtar is motivated by money. Whenever he is quoted he seems to be saying that the turtles are fine and we should all think about the lovely money that these people are bringing into the area and, presumably, various people's pockets!

I was pleased to read that the event on the beach has been cancelled. It is also interesting to see that a Facebook group has been set up for people to pay a visit to that particular public beach this evening.

It certainly hasn't done the hotel and the mukhtar any favours. If memory serves, doesn't the Anassa have some issues with planning permission?

Aguilera performed but no Bieber! Coverage on local press, although they originally said the wedding was to be today (Thursday) but it seems to have taken place yesterday.
